to have attended approved courses of study in the subjects of the Faculty for not less than three academic years. The Faculty shall have power to exempt from Section (b) candidates who have satisfied the requirements of the Matriculation examination for persons of mature years.

4. The Faculty shall have power to grant exemption, both in regard to examination and to attendance upon courses, to graduates of this University in other Faculties than that of Arts who desire to proceed to the degree of Bachelor of Arts, upon evidence satisfactory to the Faculty of prior systematic study, and of adequate attainment in subjects within the Arts curriculum, provided that every such candidate shall be required to take all the examinations prescribed for the second and third years of study, and that in no case shall attendance for less than one academic year upon approved courses in any of the subjects not forming part of the candidate's qualification for a degree in another Faculty, and offered for the examinations for the degree of Bachelor of Arts, be recognised as qualifying for admission to these examinations.

5. Regulations shall determine the attendance which shall be required of candidates both for the Ordinary degree and for the degree with Honours.

Ordinary Degree of Bachelor of Arts

(See also Regulations, p. 159)

6. The course of study for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts shall extend over three years. All students presenting themselves for the examination in any of the subjects for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts shall be required to have attended an approved course in each of the subjects which they offer.

7. The subjects and courses to be taken in each year

of study shall be chosen after consultation with the Dean of the Faculty.

8. The courses taken for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts shall be ten in number; a subject taken for two years or for three years shall be reckoned as equivalent to two or three courses respectively.

9. *Three subjects at least shall be studied for two consecutive years, of which one shall be a language and one not a language.

IO. One subject at least shall be studied for three years.

Candidates of special merit may be awarded a mark of distinction in one or more of the subjects offered by them during the second and third year of study.

12. Approved students in their third year of study may study, in a more intensive form, any subject already studied for two years, a subject so studied being reckoned as equivalent to two courses. Those who attain a sufficient standard in the subject so studied shall receive a mark of distinction in that subject.

13. All candidates for the degree shall be examined in each subject at the end of their first year of University study. They shall not be allowed to proceed to the second year of study until they have satisfied the Examiners in the whole of the first year examination.

14. A further examination in each subject studied for more than one year shall be taken at the end of the last year of study in that subject.

15. In the case of failure in the Final examination in a one-, two-, or three-years' subject, a candidate may present such subject again, but no candidate shall present a subject for examination on more than three occasions.

* Ancient History, Mediaeval History and Modern History are considered alternative parts of one subject.

Subjects of the Examination.

16. The subjects of the first year courses shall be four in number, selected from the following, and shall include at least one language, and at least one subject which is not a language :

(a) Greek, Latin, Hellenistic Greek, Hebrew, French, Italian, Spanish, German, Celtic, Russian,

and any other language in which approved courses are offered.

(b) English Literature, Early English Language and Literature, Ancient History, Mediaeval History, Modern History, Ecclesiastical History, Philosophy, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Social Science.

17. The studies from which courses shall be chosen for the second and third years' courses and examinations are as follows:

(i) Greek; (ii) Hellenistic Greek; (iii) Latin; (iv) French; (v) Italian; (vi) Spanish; (vii) German; (viii) Celtic; (ix) Russian; (x) Early English Language and Literature; (xi) Icelandic'; (xii) Semitic Languages; (xiii) Chinese; (xiv) English Literature; (xv) Ancient History; (xvi) History, Mediaeval and Modern; (xvii) Mediaeval History; (xviii) Modern History; (xix) Palaeography; (xx) Archaeology; (xxi) Ecclesiastical History; (xxii) Economic History; (xxiii) Economics; (xxiv) Geography; (xxv) Education; (xxvi) Philosophy; (xxvii) Mathematics; (xxviii) Natural Science; (xxix) Social Science.

Regulations shall determine the conditions under which these studies or combinations of these studies will be reckoned as one-year, two-year or three-year courses for the examinations for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts.

Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours

18. Candidates for this degree may present themselves in any one of the following Schools:

(i) Classics; (ii) French; (iii) Spanish; (iv) Italian
(v) German; (vi) Russian; (vii) English;
(viii) Celtic; (ix) Ancient History; (x)
History, Mediaeval and Modern; (xi) Phil-
osophy; (xii) Economics; (xiii) Geography;
(xiv) Social Science; (xv) Jurisprudence.

19. All candidates shall be required to have attended approved courses of study.

20. Candidates who have failed in the examination shall not be permitted to present themselves again for the degree with Honours.

21. No No candidate shall present himself in any Honours School later than the end of the sixth year after Matriculation.

22.

The examination in each Honours School of the Faculty shall be divided into two parts.

23. Students who have graduated in the Faculty may present themselves for the degree with Honours in any School of the Faculty, provided that they have already attended approved courses for not less than two years in one of the subjects of the School, and that they attend the courses prescribed for the School for two years.

24. Students who have graduated with Honours in any School of the Faculty may, with the consent of the Faculty, present themselves for Honours in any other School, provided that they attend the courses prescribed for such School during at least one year. Such students will be excused such portions of the First and Second Parts of the Honours examination in the second School as may be determined in each case by the Faculty.

25. Regulations shall determine the conditions under which students, who have attended courses of study approved for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts, may enter themselves for an Honours School of the Faculty and be thereupon entitled to relaxation of the requirements concerning attendance.

26. Regulations shall determine the conditions under which students, who have attended approved courses in any Honours School of the Faculty, may offer themselves as candidates for the Ordinary degree of Bachelor of Arts and be thereupon entitled to relaxation of the requirements concerning attendance.

DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS

ORDINANCE XIX

(See also Regulations, p. 187)

I. The degree of Master of Arts may, after report from the Faculty, be conferred under Clauses 2 and 3 of this Ordinance upon Bachelors of Arts, and under Clauses 4 and 5 upon such other candidates as may be approved by Faculty.

2. Bachelors of Arts who have passed the examination for that degree in an Honours School may proceed to the Master's degree without further examination, provided that they furnish evidence satisfactory to the Faculty and to the Examiners that they have carried on systematic work in approved subjects of their School for at least two years after the date of graduation as Bachelor, under the general direction of the heads of the departments concerned.

3. Bachelors of Arts who have not passed the examination for that degree in an Honours School, and Bachelors of Architecture, whether they have passed the examination for that degree with Honours or not, may proceed to the Master's degree by passing a further examination in any of the studies of the Faculty, under conditions to be determined by Regulations,
