SCHOOL OF HYGIENE

The City of Liverpool and its Port afford exceptional advantages for the study of Public Health, and every facility is afforded for training in Sanitary Science and State Medicine. For the purpose of carrying out the requirements of the various Acts of Parliament, Orders of the Ministry of Health, and the various Bye-Laws and Regulations relating to Sanitary administration, a trained staff of some 160 members is employed under the Medical Officer of Health.

The University School of Hygiene, which is situated in Mount Pleasant and adjacent to the University, is entirely devoted to the study of Public Health. In it are accommodated the laboratories of the City Analyst and the City Bacteriologist. It also includes a lecture hall, library, and Exhibition of appliances, ancient and modern, as well as models, drawings, industrial and other exhibits, illustrating the advance of hygiene and its application to public health administration in every detail. The courses of study fulfil the requirements for the Final M.B., Ch.B. examinations, and also for the Diplomas in Public Health of the various Universities and Licensing Bodies, for the Diploma in Tropical Hygiene, for the degree of Master of Hygiene, and for the Sanitary Science Certificates and Health Visitors' Certificates of the various qualifying bodies.

INTRODUCTION

The School of Tropical Medicine was founded in 1898, and received its Charter of Incorporation in 1905. It is governed by a Committee representative of the University, the Royal Southern Hospital, and the merchants and shipowners of Liverpool. In the year 1900 the School received official recognition from the Government as an institution at which their Medical Officers may be specially trained for professional work in the Tropics.

OBJECTS OF THE SCHOOL

I. To train medical men proceeding to the tropics in the special subject of tropical diseases.

2. To conduct original researches into tropical diseases.

3. To organise prophylactic measures against tropical diseases.

The School has sent out over thirty-two expeditions to different parts of the tropics in order to investigate diseases or to advise regarding sanitary measures.

It has also published a large number of separate memoirs by members of the staff or workers connected with the School, besides several miscellaneous works; and now publishes the Annals of Tropical Medicine and Parasitology.
