Extracts from the Bye Laws and Regulations.

Persons frequenting the Docks, Quays, and Premises, will be subject to Examination and Search on quitting them, if thought requisite by the Officer of the Dock Establishment, who may be appointed for that purpose; and any obstruction thereto, the Party resisting liable to a Fine of Ten Shillings.

The Sworn Officers of the respective Ships (either lading or unlading) in the Docks, or other Officers authorised by the East India Company to act as such, shall have access to them at all working Hours, leaving their Names and Stations with the Gate Keepers.

In order to prevent the heavy loss that would arise by accidents to Ships fully laden coming into the said Docks, or to provide as much as possible for such Event, should it happen, as well as to render the Bason and Locks less crowded with Ships or Craft, and the Crews within the Dock Premises from being longer therein than is requisite for the safety of their respective Vessels, it is ordained, That no Ship shall be admitted within the Dock or Bason Gates, unless in Cases of Exigency, that is not dismantled to her Lower Masts, and her Guns, Ammunition, Anchors, and Stores delivered, to such extent as the Dock Master shall prescribe.

Every Ship will be unloaded in turn, as she arrives at her Moorings, and is ready to enter the Docks conformable to the Regulations, unless the Court of Directors of the East India Company should otherwise require, or unless it be their repairing Voyage, or that any other Cause, in the Opinion of the Court of Directors, should interfere to pre

vent.

A report to be made by the Commanding Officer of each Ship, and regularly signed and delivered to the Dock Master, of the Water the Ship has made every twelve hours for three days successively, before she be permitted to enter; and if the Report be incorrect, the Officer signing the same to suffer a penalty of Five Pounds, and the Ship to be the last delivered.

Such Stores as may remain in the Ship, after coming into the Bason, are to be discharged previous to her going into
