the inner Dock. On the Ship's arrival in the inner Dock, no Person can have access to her but the King's, Company's Ship, and Dock Officers, on the establishmeut, nor any of these after four o'clock in the Evening.

The Owners being responsible for the safe delivery of the Cargo, they are at liberty to have the Commander, or any of the sworn officers, during working hours, to inspect the Delivery, and to ascertain, in Company with the Dock Officers, the injury (if any) that may appear to have happened during the Voyage, and its cause.

The watering of the Ships, and the lading of them, shall be conformable to their times for coming afloat, and as directed by the Dock Master, any person in the command of Ships either resisting such rotation, or not complying therewith, shall suffera Fine of Forty Shillings.

The regulations for lading or unlading, established by the Court of Directors, shall be binding on all parties concerned therein, and any person about the Docks, who shall prevent their Execution, shall be liable to a Penalty of Forty Shillings.

Extracts from Acts of Parliament for unloading Ships in the East India Docks,

All Ships from the East Indies or China are to unload within the Docks, excepting such parts thereof as may be

be unloaded at Long Reach, for lessening the Draught of Water of the Ships; and in case any Owner, Commander, &c. of Ships with East India Produce on board, suffering them to be unloaded except as above, to forfeit for every offence £500, 43, Geo. 3. Cap. 126, Sect. 63.

And if at any time East India Ships cannot be admitted into the Docks, the Commissioners of the Customs may authorise the Cargoes of those particular Ships to be discharged elsewhere within the Port of London, Sect 64.

And Outward Bound Ships bound to India or China to load either in the Docks or in the River below Limehouse Creek. Sect. 65.

Regulations for Moorings, entering the Docks, preventing obstructions, and unloading. Sect. 67, 68, 69, 70.

All Vessels to land Gunpowder before entering the Dock premises, and other combustible matter to be removed within 12 Hours after entering the docks, and no Fire, Candle or Lamps to be lighted in the Docks under Penalty of £5 to £10. Sect 73, 74.

Ships or Country Ships, removing from the Docks, after unloading Inwards, and not loading there Outwards, to have returned.

And to such Ships completing their Number of Voyages, or not continuing in the East India Trade, to have returned per Ton within one month after such Ships shall be

And in addition to the above a further Rate of 28. per Ton, on all Goods, &c. &c. imported by the East India Company to be paid the Dock Company within Three Months after the Ship shall be cleared (the Tonnage to be computed according 2s. per Ton. to the mode of calculating Tous of Goods, &c. by the East India Company.) The Amounts paid for private Goods to be deducted by the East India Company from the produce of such goods. Sect. 91, 92. 43, Geo. 3. Cap. 26.

The docks not to affect the liability of the Owners and Commanders of East India Ships in respect to the due performance of their Contracts, Charter parties, and agreements. Sect. 101.

The East India Company's Surveyors to superintend the loading and unloading the Ships as heretofore. Sect.

The Hatches of East India Ships are to be locked down on their arrival at Gravesend, and to continue so until moored in the Docks, and the Captain, chief or second Mates, to remain on board till the Keys of the Hatches are delivered to a person appointed by the East India Company to receive them. 46, Geo. 3 Cap. 113, Sect. 21.

Prize Ships laden with the produce of the East Indies or China, are to be subject to the same Regulations as other Ships arriving with East India Produce, and to pay the same Charge as other privileged goods. Sect. 23.

No Holidays to be kept at the Docks except Sundays, Christmas Days, and Good Fridays, and days appointed for a Fast or Thanksgivings. Sect. 33.

No Fees to be taken by any of the Company's Officers. Sect. 34.

The East India Company to provide Caravans for the conveyance of Goods from the Docks, and the Goods to be removed between the Hours of Seven and Four; Tea and other goods may be landed and conveyed in the Caravans, to the Warehouses of the East India Company without being previously Weighed. 46, Geo. 3. Full Uniform of the Commanders and Officers in the Employ of the Honorable United East India Company.

REGULAR SHIPS.

COMMANDER.-Fine blue Coat, black Genoa Velvet round the Cuffs, four holes by two's; three outside, one inside. Black Velvet Lapells, with ten holes, by two's. Black Velvet panteen Cape, with one hole on each side, straight Flaps, with four holes by two's. The fore Parts lined with Buff silk serge, Back slit and turns faced with the same. One Button on each hip, and one at the bottom; Gold embroidered Button Holes throughout and gilt Buttons, with the Company's Crest.

CHIEF MATE.-Blue Coat, black Velvet Lapells, Cuff and Collar, with one small Button to each Cuff; Buttons to be gilt, with the Company's Crest.

SECOND MATE. Similar Uniform to the Chief; with two small Buttons on each Cuff.

THIRD MATE.-Similar Uniform to the Chief, with three small Buttons on each Cuff.

FOURTH MATE.-Similar Uniform to the Chief; with four small Buttons on each Cuff..

EXTRA SHIPS.

CAPTAIN.-Blue Coat, black Velvet Lapells, Cuff, and Collar, with only one embroidered Button-hole on each Cuff, and on each side of the Collar; Buttons gilt, with the Company's Crest.

CHIEF MATE.-Blue Coat, single breasted, with black Velvet Collar and Cuffs, and one small Button-hole on each Cuff, Buttons gilt, with Company's Crest.

SECOND MATE.-Similar Uniform to the Chief, with two small Buttons on each Cuff.

THIRD MATE.-Similar Uniform to the Chief Mate's, with three small buttons on each Cuff.

ORDERED.-That the Commanders and Officers do always appear in their Uniform whenever they attend the Court of Directors, or any Committee thereof, or any of the Presidents and Councils in India, or at St. Helena, or the

QUALIFICATIONS

of Commanders and Mates of Ships, established by the Honorable Court of Directors, 24th of January, 1804.

REGULAR SHIPS.

COMMANDER. THAT a commander shall have attained the full age of twenty-five years, and have performed a voyage to and from India or China, in the Company's regular service, as chief or second mate, or commanded a ship in the extra service.

CHIEF MATE. That a chief mate shall have attained the full age of twenty-three years, and have performed a voyage to and from India or China, in the Company's service, in the station of second or third mate.

SECOND MATE. That a second mate shall have attained the full age of twenty-two years, and performed a voyage to and from India or China, in the Company's service, in the station of third mate.

THIRD MATE. That a third mate shall have attained the full age of twenty-one years, and have performed two voyages to and from India or China, in the Company's service.

FOURTH MATE. That a fourth mate shall have attained the full age of twenty years, and performed one voyage to and from India or China, in the Company's service, of not less than twenty months; or one shorter voyage to and from India or China, in the Company's service, and one year in actual service in any other employ, of which last he shall produce satisfactory certificates to the Committee of Shipping.

EXTRA SHIPS.

COMMANDER. That a commander shall have attained the full age of twenty-three years and upwards, and shall have performed three voyages to and from India or China, in the Company's service, one of which shall have been in the station of chief or second mate in a regular ship, or chief mate of au extra ship.
