THE JUDICIAL DICTIONARY;

[graphic]

OR

Interpreter of Words and Phrases

BY THE

BRITISH JUDGES AND

By F. STROUD,

PARLIAMENT.

OF LINCOLN'S INN, BARRISTER-AT-LAW, RECORDER OF TEWKESBURY.

"This monumental work differs entirely from the law lexicons of Wharton and Sweet, being, in fact, a Dictionary of the English Language as interpreted by Judges and Parliament, and fully supported in every instance by authorities, to the number of about 20,000. Within those limits, therefore, it may be called an Authoritative Dictionary of the English Language, and must prove of increasing usefulness, not only to judges, lawyers, and politicians, but also to all those engaged in business, journalism, and literature."-Law Times.

"It must find a place in every law library.. It is difficult to exaggerate its usefulness, for it collects and presents, in a readily accessible form, those judicial interpretations of words and phrases which a lawyer, unaided, might spend days (nay, weeks) in hunting for-definitions scattered up and down the pages of law reports and standard text-books from the Year Books of Edward II. to the decisions of the courts of to-day. It is invaluable, not only as a labour-saving machine, but as a real contribution to legal literature. Mr. Stroud's work is a Standard Classic of the Law."-Law Journal. "It is not meant for the use of lawyers alone, but is intended to be, and doubtless will be, an Authoritative Interpreter of the English of Affairs for the British Empire."-Law Quarterly

Review.

"This Judicial Dictionary is pre-eminently a ground from which may be extracted suggestions of the greatest utility, not merely for the advocate in court, but also for the practitioner who has to advise, including the solicitor who, on short notice, has to tell his client the meaning of an expression in a document or Act of Parliament. It is really a Legal Johnson or Webster, but extended to phrases as well as to words. An investigation of the book has led us to satisfactory conclusions as to its accuracy and completeness."-Solicitors' Journal.

[merged small][ocr errors]

"We feel a good deal richer by the possession of this unique work, and every lawyer who takes a pride in keeping his library up-to-date should at once furnish himself with a copy."-Lavo Notes.

"It is a work which is of constant practical utility to the English-speaking lawyer."-Law Student's Journal. "We agree that the work, as well as the Idea upon which it is based, is unique; and further, consider it decidedly good."American Law Register.

53

"These three volumes will be a source of constant satisfaction

and delight. Of course, every public law library in the United States must and will have them; and so will every private law library of any pretension to learning or completeness." -American Law Review.

"Mr. Stroud has rendered a service to all who are in any way concerned in the administration of Acts of Parliament, the value of which cannot be over-estimated."-Local Government Chronicle.

"There can be but few, if any, words or phrases in the English Language, that have received Judicial or Statutory Interpretation, which are not to be found collected and arranged in these pages."-Standard.

[ocr errors]

The work is admirably carried out and the cross references are numerous and exhaustive."-Athenæum.

"The book is extremely well done."-Saturday Review.

66

We cordially recommend it to lawyers and men of business."-Spectator.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAID OF THE FIRST EDITION.

"I often have had occasion to use it, and always found its assistance valuable."-The late LORD BOWEN.
An excellent idea; very well done."-The late RIGHT HON. LORD COLERIDGE, LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF ENGLAND.

WHAT THE JUDGES SAY OF THIS SECOND EDITION.

"I most gladly testify my high appreciation of the Judicial Dictionary. It contains a vast amount of most valuable information and displays extraordinary labour and care."-The RIGHT HON. LORD ALVERSTONE, LORD CHIEF JUSTICE OF ENGLAND.

"The book is one of the best productions of our time."-LORD JUSTICE MATHEW.

[ocr errors][merged small]

"It is a most useful work, and this edition ought to be highly appreciated by the Bar as well as the Bench."-Mr. JUSTICE GRANTHAM.

[ocr errors]

It is a most useful book and one in which I feel greatly interested. I am glad that the work is to be continued by means of supplements."-Mr. JUSTICE GAINSFORD-BRUCE.

great work."-THE RIGHT HON. JOSEPH CHAMBERLAIN, M.P.

"The First Edition was always at my elbow, and now the Second will be my constant companion. Its use is infinite."F. B. PALMER, Esq., Author of "Palmer's Company Law," "Palmer's Company Precedents," &c.
