the powers vested in them by an Act, passed in the seventh and eighth years of the reign of Her present Majesty, cap. 84, intituled "An Act for regulating the construction and the use of buildings in the metropolis and its neighbourhood," appointed Philip Hardwick, Esq. of Russell-square, in the county of Middlesex, Architect, to examine, together with the Official Referees of Metropolitan Buildings, any persons who may present themselves to be examined for the purpose of obtaining a certificate of qualification, with the view of becoming Candidates for the office of District Surveyors of Metropolitan Buildings of any district within the limits of the said Act.

THE Queen has been graciously pleased to appoint Walter Charles Metcalfe Plowden, Esq. to be Her Majesty's Consul in Abyssinia.

COURT OF QUEEN'S BENCH.

This Court will, on Tuesday the 1st day of February next, and the three following days, and on Tuesday the 8th day of February, and

the four following days, hold Sittings, and will proceed in disposing of the business in the Special Paper, Crown Paper, and New Trial Paper, and will also hold a Sitting on Saturday the 26th day of February, and give Judgment in cases previously argued.

THE Queen has been pleased to constitute and appoint Major General John Bell, C. B. to be Lieutenant Governor of the island of Guernsey, in the room of Major General William Francis Patrick Napier, C. B.

Downing-Street, January 28, 1848.

The Queen has been pleased to appoint John Scott, Esq. to be Surveying Engineer and Superintendent of Public Works, and James Hosken, Esq. Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, to be Master Attendant and Postmaster, for the island of Labuan.

Her Majesty has also been pleased to appoint Charles Simms, Esq. to be Chief Clerk and Registrar of the Supreme Court, and Clerk of the Central Circuit Court, of the island of Newfoundland.

COURT OF COMMON PLEAS. Hilary Term, in the eleventh year of the reign of Queen Victoria.

Thursday the 27th day of January 1848. This Court will, on Tuesday the 8th day of February next, and four following days, hold Sittings, and will proceed in disposing of the business now pending in the Paper of New Trials, and in the Special Paper, and will also proceed to give Judgment in certain of the matters that will then be standing over for the consideration of the Court. ORDERS for the Court's going into Mourning, on Thursday next the 3d instant, for His late Majesty Christian VIII. King of Denmark,

viz.

The Ladies to wear black silk, fringed or plain linen, white gloves, necklaces and ear-rings, black or white shoes, fans and tippets.

The Gentlemen to wear black, full trimmed, fringed or plain linen, black swords and buckles.

The Court to change the Mourning, on Thursday the 17th instant, viz.

The Ladies to wear black silk or velvet, coloured ribbons, fans and tippets, or plain white, or white and gold, or white and silver stuffs, with black ribbons.

The Gentlemen to wear black coats, and black or plain white, or white and gold, or white and silver stuff waistcoats, full trimmed, coloured swords and buckles.

And, on Thursday the 24th instant, the Court to go out of Mourning.

The Queen has been graciously pleased to give orders for the appointment of Major General Sir John Hunter Littler, of the Bengal Infantry, Knight Commander of the Most Honourable Order of the Bath, to be an Ordinary Member of the Military Division of the First Class or Knights Grand Cross of the said Order.

The Queen has been pleased to appoint Arthur Bailey, Esq. to be Surveyor General for Her Majesty's Settlements in the Falkland Islands.

Whitehall, January 31, 1848.

The Queen has been pleased to grant unto the Reverend Edward Hartopp Grove, M. A. the place and dignity of a Canon of the cathedral church of Worcester, the same being void by the death of the Reverend William Digby, late Canon thereof.
