OF the general truth and accuracy of this Work, of which a Fourth Edition is now most respectfully presented to the reader, the world at large are competent to judge; but it is some satisfaction to the Editor, since the circulation of the previous Editions, in being able to add, that even the more private anecdotes and details have received the most favourable approval from many of those, who, from an intimate acquaintance with our beloved and lamented Princess, are best able to appreciate her character.

Of these more personal and well authenticated anecdotes, the additions to the present Edition will be found very extensive and all strongly corroborative, not only of the active benevolence of HER we have lost-of her amiable domestic disposition-her literary and political acquirements-and her knowledge of the human heart; but also of her religious habits-unostentatious piety, and well
