AN ACT to authorize the payment of one hundred and twenty-nine dollars
and eighty cents to George Matney.

Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of
the Territory of Kansas, as follows:

Treasurer of territory authorized

sum of money.

SECTION 1. That the treasurer of the territory of Kansas be and he is hereby authorized to pay to Geo. Matney one hundred to pay a specified and twenty-nine dollars and eighty cents, out of any money in the treasury not otherwise appropriated, provided the general government shall not pay this class of claims. Approved February 23d, 1857.

AN ACT for the relief of William I. Preston.

Be il enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of
the Territory of Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. That the auditor of public accounts be and is
hereby directed to issue his warrant on the treasury, to be paid
out of any moneys not otherwise appropriated, for the sum of
two hundred and twenty dollars, to Wm. I. Preston, being the
amount paid by said Preston in carrying out the requisition of
Governor Shannon upon the Governor of Missouri, for one
Charles Robinson.

SEC. 2. That the said Preston is hereby allowed the sum of fifty-six dollars for his personal services from Lecompton to Jefferson city, Missouri.

This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

Approved February 20th, 1857.

AN ACT for the relief of John W. Smith.

Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of
the Territory of Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. The sheriff of Doniphan county is hereby requir-
ed to hold in his hands the full amount by him collected, under
the assessment for the year eighteen hundred and fifty-six, un-
der the provisions of the tenth section of the second article of
an act entitled "An act to provide for the collection of the rev-

enue," being the sum to which the assessor is entitled for his assessment, upon the failure of the party to give in his taxable property; and the said sheriff shall, at the time of making his settlement as collector, pay over to John W. Smith, assessor of Doniphan county, the amount so collected, after deducting his per centage for collecting the same, and take the receipt of the said John W. Smith for the amount so paid.

This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

AN ACT for the better protection of Luther M. Carter, and the Tecumseh
Town Association.

Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of
the Territory of Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. That Luther M. Carter, as carpenter and conShawnee attach tractor of the wood work, and the Tecumseh Town Association, as contractors for the brick and other work on the court-house in and for the county of Shawnee, at the town of Tecumseh, shall have a lien, and such lien is hereby attached upon the said building and the ground upon which it stands, for the amount of indebtedness of the said county to the said contractors severally, for the work and material furnished in the erection of said court-house; and the said Luther M. Carter and the Tecumseh Town Association may severally perfect and carry into effect such lien to the same extent, and in the same manner, as is provided by an act entitled "An act for securing liens to mechanics and others," any thing in the sixth section of an act entitled "An act in relation to county organizations, powers and privileges," or the provisions of any other act, to the contrary notwithstanding. The lien hereby granted shall be mutual, and no precedence shall accrue to either party herein named.

This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage.

AN ACT to change the name of Jeannette S. H. Martin, to Jeannette S. H.

Burriss.

Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of

the Territory of Kansas, as follows:

SECTION 1. That the name of Jeannette S. H. Martin, of the Name changed. county of Leavenworth, be and the same is hereby changed to

Jeannette S. H. Burriss.

This act to take effect from and after its passage.

AN ACT to authorize Mary Elizabeth Spratt to sue for a divorce. Be it enacted by the Governor and Legislative Assembly of the Territory of Kansas, as follows :

Authorized to

divorce.

SECTION 1. Mary Elizabeth Spratt, of the county of Leavenworth, is hereby authorized to institute and prosecute her suit prosecute suit for for a divorce, from the bonds of matrimony heretofore entered into between her and Bertran Spratt, in the probate court of Leavenworth county, and such court is hereby granted the power to hear and determine the same, in accordance with the provisions of the law governing divorces, with the exception of the time of notice required by law in relation to absent defendants.

Probate court may determine

SEC. 2. That the said probate court may hear and determine said case at its next term of said court, upon satisfactory proof said case. of three insertions of notice in some newspaper printed in Leavenworth county, the last of which shall be at least one day before the said next term; and that the said Mary Elizabeth Spratt shall not be taxed with any costs in such suit.

This act to take effect and be in force from and after its passage.
