REPORT OF CORRESPONDING SECRETARY.

BALTIMORE, April 11th, 1882.

Mr. President and Gentlemen:-Your Corresponding Secretary would report that he has fulfilled the duties of his office in accordance with the requirements of the constitution, notified officers, committees, sections and delegates of their election or appointment, given notice of meetings of the Faculty, and invited the county societies to send delegates to the annual convention of the Faculty.

Respectfully submitted,

J. EDWIN MICHAEL, M. D.
Corresponding Secretary.

REPORT OF THE TREASURER.

The Treasurer has the honor of submitting his report for the fiscal year ending April 11th, 1882.

During the year past, the membership of the Faculty has been diminished by thirteen-seven deaths, viz., Drs. John M. Sullivan, J. William Walls, I. D. Thomson, E. Lloyd Howard, T. Clay Maddux, B. Titcomb, and Samuel P. Smith; five resignations, viz., Drs. Dennis I. McKew, Jas. M. Smith, Alan P. Smith, W. G. G. Willson, and Grafton Tyler, and one dropped for non-payment of dues, being three years in arrears, viz., Dr. John H. Aldridge. During the same time its membership has been augmented by the election of twenty-six active, and two honorary members. Of the former are Drs. A. Aronsohn, H. C. McSherry, L. Ernest Neale, Robert T. Wilson, H. Harlan, L. W. Knight, C. B. Gamble, T. P. Temple, C. O'Donovan, Jr., A. C. Pole, J. H. Branham, Jno. W. Chambers, Wm. Brinton, L. R.

Coates, C. Johnston, Jr., H. F. Hill, Wm. Green, Robt. W. Johnson, Jas. Bordley, J. H. Prentiss, Thos. B. Owings, T. Barton Brune, R. H. P. Ellis, J. Lee McComas, H. Boyd Wylie, and R. W. Mansfield. Of the latter are Prof. Jno. W. Mallet, M. D., of the University of Virginia, and Prof. Wm. Goodell, M. D., of the University of Pennsylvania.

The financial condition of the Faculty is healthy; and, although the current expenses have considerably exceeded those of previous years, yet, by careful management, the net proceeds of the sale of the house on Courtland street, amounting to $500, have been kept intact, and are held subject to the disposition of the Faculty.

The Library, under the efficient management of the present committee, has been increased by about three hundred and twenty volumes, and in estimated valuation by at least $1000; so that the present estimated value of the Library and fixtures is not less than $7500.

The Executive Committee has to report that during the past year it has held a number of meetings and transacted some important business for the Faculty. In the early part of the year it ordered a number of certificates for delegates from this to other societies. The lithographer has executed a beautiful copy from a design originated and submitted by a member of this committee, Dr. Christopher Johnston.

An additional amount of alcohol was found necessary to preserve the pathological specimens now in possession of the Faculty. The curator faithfully attended to this work as ordered by the committee.

The Publication Committee was requested not to allow any reprints to be distributed until the regular volume of the Transactions was distributed.

In August, 1881, the Executive Committee was so fortunate as to secure an orator for this annual meeting in the person of Dr. A. M. Fauntleroy, Medical Superintendent of the Western Lunatic Asylum, at Staunton, Va. He will deliver the address in this hall on Thursday, at 12 o'clock. His subject is "The Reciprocal Influence of Morbid Physical and Psychical Conditions of the Nervous System."

The Library Committee was authorized to have additional shelving placed in the library to accommodate the increasing number of vol

umes. The committee would call the attention of members to the large amount of choice medical literature to be found in the excellent journals now on the tables of the library.

The vacancy in the Chairmanship of the Section on Surgery, caused by the resignation of Dr. Alan P. Smith, only came to the knowledge of the Executive Committee about ten days ago. Dr. L. McLane Tiffany was appointed to fill the vacancy. We fear we shall be disappointed in a full report from this Section, owing to the short notice given its present chairman.

The President of the Faculty was directed by the Executive Committee, in connection with the Treasurer, to invest the money received from the sale of the Courtland-street property (amounting to about five hundred dollars) in such manner as they deemed advisable for the benefit of the Faculty.

By the kindness of President D. C. Gilman, this hall has been secured for this annual meeting of the Faculty, with the understanding that the room be vacated at 4.15 P. M. each day.

The committee has the pleasure of announcing that it has arranged with Prof. H. Newell Martin, of the Johns Hopkins University, to have several papers read by himself and members of his staff, at 12 M. on Wednesday, and at the same hour on Friday. The subjects will be announced hereafter.

This committee commends the good work done by the Section on Obstetrics and Gynecology during the past year, as an example well worthy to be imitated by the other Sections.

The Faculty is to be congratulated on the auspicious signs of a vigorous and interesting session. Considerable business was referred to special committees at the last annual meeting. We shall expect full reports from them, and refrain here from alluding to their work.

During the past year the increasing value of the Library, to the members of the Faculty, has been evidenced both in widely expressed approval of its growing merits and in the extent to which the material upon its tables and shelves has been utilized. It has become evident to
