That ye may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Ghost, &c. That the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost, &c. To make the Gentiles obedient, &c. by the power ver of the Spirit of God.Rom. xv. 13. 16. 18, 19.

Eye hath not seen, &c. but God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, &c. The things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God. Now we have received, &c. the Spirit of God, that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.1 Cor. ii. 9-12.

Such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, &c. by the Spirit of our God.-1 Cor. vi. 11. Titus iii. 5.

No man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit, &c. The manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit, the word of wisdom, &c. But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally, as he will, &c. By one Spirit we are all baptized into one body.-1 Cor. xii. 3, 4. 7-11. 13.

Ye are manifestly declared to be the epistle of Christ, ministered by us, written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God; not in tables of stone, but in fleshly tables of the heart, &c. But we all with open face, beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image, from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord (or of the Lord, the Spirit). - 2 Cor. iii. 3. 18.

We, through the Spirit, wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.Gal. v. 5. 22.

Through him we both have an access by one Spirit unto the Father. Eph. ii. 18.

The mystery of Christ, which in

other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed, &c. by the Spirit, &c. I bow my knees unto the Father, &c. that he would grant you, &c. to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man. -Eph. iii. 4, 5. 14. 16.

Who declared unto us your love in the Spirit. Col. i. 8.

Our gospel came not unto you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Ghost, &c. And ye became followers of us, and of the Lord.1 Thess. i. 5, 6.

God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation, through sanctification of the Spirit, and belief of the truth.-2 Thess. ii. 13.

That good thing which was committed unto thee, keep by the Holy Ghost, which dwelleth in us.2 Tim. i. 14.

He saved us by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost, which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ.-Titus iii. 5, 6. Eph. v. 26.

Elect, &c. through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience, &c. Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit, unto unfeigned love of the brethren, &c.-1 Pet. i. 2. 22.

But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you; but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, &c.-1 Johnii. 20.27.

SECT. н. Of the Spirit of God's being given to, and dwelling in Believers, and working in them, and upon others. The Nature, Appearance, and Fruits of the Spirit: and the Saints' Duty toward the Spirit, in following him; and not sinning against, grieving, or quenching the Spirit.

I. Of the Spirit of God working in Believers and upon others. THESE be they who separate them

selves, sensual, having not the Spirit, -Jude 19.

And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?-Gen. xli. 38.

I have called by name Bezaleel, &c. And I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass, &c.Exod. xxxi. 2-4. xxxv. 31, &c.

Gather unto me seventy men of the elders of Israel, &c. And I will take of the Spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them, and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, &c. And the Lord came down, &c. and took of the Spirit that was upon him, and gave it unto the seventy elders. And it came to pass, that when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and did not cease, &c. Would God that all the Lord's people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his Spirit upon them. Numb. xi. 16, 17. 25,

26. 29.

My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed me fully, him will I bring into the land. - Numb. xiv. 24.

And Balaam lift up his eyes, &c. and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he blessed Israel, instead of cursing them. Numb. xxiv. 2, 3. 10.

Take thee Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay thine hand upon him.-Numb. xxvii. 18.

The Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, &c.-Judges xi. 29.

Samson the child grew, and the Lord blessed him, and the Spirit of the Lord began to move him at times, in the camp of Dan.-Judges xiii. 24, 25.

And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he rent the lion as he would have rent a kid, &c. And the Spirit of the Lord came upon

him, and he, &c. slew thirty of them, &c.-Judges xiv. 6. 19.

The Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and the cords that were upon his arms became as flax.Judges xv. 14.

The Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophecy with them, and shalt be turned into another man, &c. And the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied.-1 Sam. x. 6.9, 10. xix. 20, 21.

Samuel anointed David; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward, &c. But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.-1 Sam. xvi. 13, 14.

David had the pattern of the house of the Lord given to him by the Spirit.-1 Chron. xxviii. 12. 19.

Yet many years didst thou forbear them, and testifiedst against them by thy Spirit in thy prophets.-Neh. ix. 30. Zech. vii. 12.

Truly I am full of power by the Spirit of the Lord, and of judgment, and of might; to declare unto Jacob his transgression, and to Israel his sin. -Micah iii. 8.

I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance, but he, &c. shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire, &c. - Matt. iii. 11. Mark i. 8.

For it is not ye that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaketh in you.-Matt. x. 20. Luke xii. 11, 12.

It is said of John, He shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother's womb, &c. The angel said unto Mary, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, &c. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost, and she spake, &c. Zecharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, &c.-Luke i. 13.15.35. 41, 42. 67.

The Holy Ghost was upon Simeon. And it was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. Luke ii. 25, 26.

If ye then being evil know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?-Luke xi. 13.

The kingdom of God cometh not with observation, &c. Behold the kingdom of God is within you (or among you).-Luke xvii. 20, 21. Matt. xii. 28.

The Spirit of truth, &c. dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.-John xiv. 17. iv. 14.

The Comforter, &c. he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment, &c. when the Spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth. For he shall not speak of himself: but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak, and he will shew you things to come. He shall glorify me, for he shall receive of mine, and shew it unto you. -John xvi. 7, 8. 13, 14.

He breathed on them, and said unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost.-John xx. 22. Job xxxii. 8. Wait for the promise of the Father, which ye have heard of me: for John truly baptized with water: but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost, not many days hence, &c. Ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you (or the power of the Holy Ghost cometh upon you).-Acts i. 4, 5.8. Luke xxiv. 49. iii. 16.

And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance, &c. Jesus, &c. having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, hath shed forth this which ye now see and hear. - Acts ii. 4. 14. 33.

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said, &c. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken, &c. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word, &c.-Acts iv. 8. 31.

The Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him.-Acts v. 32.

Stephen, a man full of the Holy Ghost, &c. and they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.-Acts vi. 5. 10. vii. 55.

Peter and John, &c. prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost; for as yet he was fallen upon none of them, &c. and they received the Holy Ghost.-Acts viii. 14-17.

The Lord, &c. hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost.-Acts ix. 17.

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word, &c. They heard them speak with tongues, &c.-Acts x. 44. 46.

Barnabas was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost, &c.-Acts xi. 24. xiii. 9.52.

God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost as he did unto us.-Acts xv. 8.

They were forbidden by the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, &c. then they essayed to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit suffered them not.-Acts xvi. 6, 7.

Paul came to Ephesus, and finding certain disciples, he said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? and they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost, &c. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them, and they spake with tongues and prophesied.-Acts xix. 1, 2. 6.

The love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, which is given unto us. Rom. v. 5.

Ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you: now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his; but if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus dwell in you, he, &c. shall quicken, &c. by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. Rom. viii. 9. 11.

Fervent in the Spirit, &c.-Rom. xii. 11.

That ye abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.-Rom. xv. 13.

We have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God, &c.-1 Cor. ii. 12.

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God? and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?-1 Cor. iii. 16. vi. 19.

He that is joined to the Lord is one Spirit.-1 Cor. vi. 17.

I think I have the Spirit of God.1 Cor. vii. 40.

Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of his Spirit in our hearts. -2 Cor. i. 22. v. 5.

Ye are the epistle of Christ, &c. written not with ink, but with the Spirit of the living God, &c.-2 Cor. iii. 3. 5, 6. 8.

We having the same Spirit of faith, according as it is written, &c. 2 Cor. iv. 13.

Christ hath redeemed us, &c. that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.-Gal. iii. 13, 14. And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Gal. iv. 6.

In whom, &c. also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance, &c.-Eph. i. 13, 14

In whom you also are builded together, for an habitation of God through the Spirit.-Eph. ii. 22. iv. 6. Be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit.-Eph. v. 18.

This shall turn to my salvation through your prayer, and the supply

of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.Phil. i. 19.

If any fellowship of the Spirit, &c. fulfil ye my joy, that ye be like-minded.-Phil. ii. 1, 2.

God who hath also given unto us his Holy Spirit.-1 Thess. iv. 8.

Then shall that wicked one be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the Spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.-2 Thess. ii. 8.

The prophets have inquired, &c. searching what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them, did signify, when it testified beforehand, &c. unto whom it was revealed, &c. by them that have preached the gospel unto you, with the Holy Ghost sent down from heaven.-1 Pet. i. 10-12.

Christ, &c. being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit. -1 Pet. iii. 18.

If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye: for the Spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you, &c.-1 Pet. iv. 14.

He hath given us great and precious promises, that by these ye might be made partakers of the divine nature, &c. Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.-2 Pet. i. 4. 21.

Whosoever is born of God, doth not commit sin, for his seed remaineth in him: and hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.-1 John iii. 9. 24.

We know that we dwell in him, and he in us, because he hath given us of his Spirit.-1 John iv. 13.

It is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth, &c. There are three that bear record in heaven, The Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one, &c. -1 John v. 6-8.

These be they, &c. sensual, having not the Spirit.-Jude 19.

Grace be unto you, &c. and from the seven spirits which are before his throne. Rev. i, 4. iii. 1. 5.

Hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches. - Rev. ii. 7. 11. 17.29.

I beheld, and lo, &c. a lamb having seven horns, and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God, sent forth into all the earth. Rev. v. 6. And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. Rev. xxii. 17.

SECT. II. The Nature, Workings, and Fruits of the Spirit.

AND the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. -Gen. i. 2.

And the Lord said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man. Gen. vi. 3.

Balaam, who came with a purpose to curse Israel, when the Spirit of God came upon him, blessed them.Numb. xxiv. 1-14.

Is the Spirit of the Lord straitened (or shortened)? are these his doings?-Micah ii. 7.

Handle me, and see me, for a Spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. - Luke xxiv. 39.

I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and it abode upon him. John i. 32.

He would have given thee living water, &c. water springing up into everlasting life. John iv. 10. 14.

He that believeth, &c. out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. This spake he of the Spirit, &c.John vii. 38, 39.

When he is come, he will convince the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.-John xvi. 8.

They were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake.-Acts vi. 10.

Ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, but the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, &c. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God. Rom. viii. 15, 16.

God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Gal. iv. 6.
