said railway, not putting a bridge or bridges over any navigable river or rivers unless such bridge or bridges as are or have been authorized by the Governor General in Council.

15. The provisions of section 68 of The Railway Act of the Province of Alberta shall not apply to the company.

16. The company shall have the power, for the purposes of the company, to generate, produce and distribute, and also procure from any person or corporation, light, heat and power in any form or by any means, and to acquire, construct, lease, sell, exchange, operate and maintain power house, stations, generating plant, production works, and such other appliances, devices and works as are necessary or convenient for the generation, production and distribution of any such form of power or service.

17. The company shall also have power to establish ferries, motor boat lines and fee amusement parks, and to operate the same in connection with the railway hereby authorized to be built, and may purchase, acquire, hold and use any real estate which the company may require for its purposes and afterwards to sell and transfer the

same.

CHAPTER 55.

An Act to Authorize James Alexander McCaffry to Practise

Law.

(Assented to March 25, 1913.)

WHEREAS a petition has been presented by James Alexander McCaffry of the City of Edmonton, in the Province of Alberta, praying to be allowed to practise law in the Province of Alberta;

And whereas it appears by the said petition that the said James Alexander McCaffry in or about the month of October, 1905, was employed as clerk in the office of Douglas Smith & Co., solicitors of London, England, and continued in such employment up to immediately previous to his immigration to Canada in the month of January, A.D. 1910;

And whereas it appears by the said petition that the said James Alexander McCaffry during his employment in the said Douglas Smith Company, was managing clerk and transacted all business incident to the practice of a solicitor, and thereby acquired extensive experience in the practise of law;

And whereas it appears by the said petition of the said James Alexander McCaffry on his arrival in Canada in the month of January, 1910, he obtained employment as a clerk in the office of Griesbach & O'Connor, barristers in the City of Edmonton in the said province, and since then has been employed in different law firms, and he is still employed and attached to a law firm in the City of Edmonton;

And whereas it appears by the said petition of the said James Alexander McCaffry that he has passed the first examination prescribed by the rules of the Law Society for the Province of Alberta;

And whereas it appears by the said petition with the said James Alexander McCaffry, he has shown ability and has not fallen beneath the standard required for a barrister and solicitor in the Province of Alberta, especially for a young practitioner, and has at all times upheld the ethics of the profession to the fullest extent;

And whereas it appears by the petition of the said James Alexander McCaffry that he is prevented from passing final examination to be admitted to practise law in the Province of Alberta, for two years longer by reason of the Rules and Regulations of the Law Society for the said province;

And whereas it is expedient to grant the prayer of the said petitioner;

Therefore His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. Upon James Alexander McCaffry, a resident of Edmonton, solicitor, tendering payment of the registration fee, and passing the final examination required for the qualification of students-at-law as barristers and solicitors, he shall be licensed and is ordered to be enrolled as a person emtitled to practise law in the Province of Alberta, under chapter 20 of the Statutes of Alberta, 1907, being An Act respecting the Legal Profession in the Province of Alberta.

CHAPTER 56.

An Act to amend Chapter 35 of the Ordinance of the North-West Territories, 1901, being an Ordinance to Incorporate the British Canadian Trust and Guarantee Company.

(Assented to March 25, 1913.)

WHEREAS The British Canadian Trust and Guarantee Company has petitioned for amendments to its Ordinance of Incorporation for the purposes hereinafter set forth; and

Whereas it is deemed expedient to grant the said petition; Therefore His Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Alberta, enacts as follows:

1. Chapter 35 of the Ordinance of the North-West Territories (1901) is hereby amended as follows:

(a) By striking out the words "The British Canadian Trust and Guarantee Company" wherever the same occur in said Ordinance and substituting therefor the words "British Canadian Trust Company";

(b) By striking out the figures "$50,000" where the same occur in the fourteenth clause thereof and substituting therefor "$100,000";

(c) By striking out the words "Ten thousand shares of $50 each" where they occur in the sixteenth clause thereof and substituting therefor the words "Five thousand shares of $100 each."

2. None of the rights or liabilities of the said corporation or of any of the members thereof or of any person who has heretofore dealt therewith shall be in any way affected by such change of name, but all such rights and liabilities: shall continue in and against the said corporation as if this Act had not been passed.

3. The secretary of the said corporation shall, within fifteen days from the date on which this Act shall be assented to, require all shareholders in the company to send to or

present at the office of the company in Lethbridge all certificates of shares now held by them within one month from the date on which such notice is sent out by the secretary and new certificates shall be issued by the company in substitution therefor to all holders of shares of record in the books of the company at the expiry of said month, and such certificates shall be issued on the basis of one share of the par value of $100 in exchange for each two shares of the par value of $50 each now outstanding.
