PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION.

It is hoped that the following pages will be found of use to a large and important class of the community who, although not members of the legal profession, have frequent occasion in the course of their business to consult books of law. The endeavour has been to bring the Law of Arbitration into a readable compass, and as far as possible to place it before the reader in language that he can understand. Having that object in view, law terms have, where possible, been dispensed with, and it is hoped that, so far as this endeavour is concerned, the end will justify the means. It will be found advisable to read the cases mentioned in the text, as they set forth many points in the Law of Arbitration and Awards other than those they are quoted to illustrate. The forms in the Appendix are given as a framework to be filled up as occasion may require, according to the ever changing varieties of actual practice.
