Vere Broke, who obtained a baronetcy in consideration of the victory he achieved as Captain of the Shannon over the United States frigate, the Chesapeake. * About 11 miles from Aylsham is HOLT, the birth-place of Sir Thomas Gresham, where there is a free school founded by that celebrated merchant. BUNGAY is situated on 201 the Waveney, which is navigable for barges up to' the town. Bungay has a handsome market place, adorned with two crosses, a theatre, assembly room, free grammar school, &c. 1 mile distant is the Bath House, where there is an excellent cold bath. Here are also several mineral springs. By means of the Waveney the town carries Jon a considerable trade in corn, malt, flour, coal, lime, &c., and has limekilns, malting-houses, flour-mills, and an extensive printing house, &c. Pop. of par. 4109. 11 9 7 6 ON LEFT FROM LOND. 1134 BECCLES is a well built town on the Waveney. It church, the porch of which has an elegant Gothic is a fine specimen of the florid Gothic. The churchyard commands a remarkably beautiful prospect. In the south part of the town are the ruins of another parish church, which was demolished by order of Queen Elizabeth. Here are also a handsome town hall, a gaol, and a well endowed free school and grammar school. A common, extending to about 1400 acres, belongs to the town. Pop. of pa. 4086. CXLI.
