(1) Ha outro preterito imperfeito do subjunctivo que se parece inteiramente com o preterito imperfeito do indicativo; a saber: that I had, que eu tivera, ou tiver, etc.: that thou hadst, que tu tiveras, ou tiveres, etc. though thou hadst had, ainda que tu tiveras, ou tiveres tido. (2) To be significa ser ou estar; porêm, excepto no presente, em todos os outros tempos só porei o auxiliar ser, fazendo o mesmo que com o verbo to have. Plural. nós somos, ou estamos. PRETERITO IMPERFEITO E PERFEITO. (1) Regularmente se faz mais uso de be que de am, art, is, ane, etc., depois da particula condicional se quando esta se traduz por if, ou por whether. V. g. Eu não sei se isto he certo: I do not know if: ou whether it be true, (2) Se eu fôra, se tu fôras, etc., se traduz por if I was, ou was I: ou melhor if I were, ou were I, etc. (1). Depois de if, whether, se; although, though, ainda que; except, excepto; unless, menos que; provided, com tanto que; em lugar d'este subjunctivo se usa mais frequentemente de I be, thou be, he be, we be, you be, they be. V. g. (1) Ha outro preterito imperfeito do subjunctivo; a saber: That I were, que eu fosse; that thou were, ou wert, que tu fosses; that he were, que elle fosse; that we were, que nós fôssemos; that you were, que vós fôsseis; that they were, que elles fossem. Usa-se d'este subjunctivo principalmente depois de although, though, ou tho, except, unless, provided, e depois dos verbos que expressão desejo; como: I would it were true; eu quizera que isto fosse certo. |
