This list was compiled from the official reports of the adjutant-general of the State of Missouri, the records of the War Department, and the rolls filed in the office of the Auditor for the War Department upon which the State was reimbursed for expenses incurred in the organization and maintenance of its militia. Although based upon such data as are accessible to the War Department, it is possible that it does not include some organizations that were in the State service, and it is known that it does not include some organizations of Citizen and Home Guards which were not recognized either as militia of the State or as in the service of the United States. The records of these organizations are very meager, especially of those formed in 1861 which were not paid through the agency of the Hawkins Taylor Commission. The rolls upon which the State was reimbursed for expenses incurred are filed in the office of the Auditor for the War Department.
