The only appropriation under the control of the Adjutant-General is the contingent fund for use of department headquarters, known as "Contingent expenses at the headquarters of the several military departments, including the staff corps serving thereat except the department judge-advocates, being for the purchase of necessary articles of office, toilet, and desk furniture, binding, maps, books of reference, professional newspapers and periodicals, and police utensils."

Out of this appropriation there has been expended at department headquarters in the Philippine Islands from the date of its occupation by the United States to last reports, a total of $555.21.

NOTE. The foregoing expenditures were made during the fiscal year ending June 30, 1901.

1. Statement of the amount of money paid by the Quartermaster's
Department to the several railways in the United States for trans-
portation of troops and supplies to and from the Philippine Islands,
and the sums paid to each of them since April 11, 1899, as shown
by reports of officers of the Quartermaster's Department..
