have drawn upon other text-books, I have endeavoured to give the appropriate reference in the text. My indebtedness to Mr. H. A. Turner in respect of proofreading is also put on record.

This edition is not meant necessarily to be read seriatim. An endeavour has been made to dispose of each question as it has arisen, but in some cases a certain amount of cross reference has been unavoidable. Whereas the first edition was intended primarily for the use of candidates for the examinations of the Chartered Insurance Institute, the present is intended to make a much wider appeal. It is nevertheless anticipated that it will prove of great utility to examinees for these examinations.

PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

ALTHOUGH the declared intention of this book is that it shall be a work of reference suitable for use by students entering for Parts I and II of the Marine Branch of the Chartered Insurance Institute's Examinations, I trust that candidates for Fellowship will also find it of some use to them.

Much of the matter should also prove of service to the clerk whose daily routine brings him into touch with Marine Insurance matters. My acknowledgments are due to the Secretary of Lloyd's, to Gow's "Sea Insurance," and to Martin's "Lloyd's."

Certain of the chapters have appeared in a different form in the Post Magazine, and all are based on lectures delivered at the Hugh Myddleton (L.C.C.) Commercial Institute.
