Mr. W. M. Tweedy was then requested to give the report on the

FINE ART DEPARTMENT,

and read the following report of the judges:-This is the first exhibition at which the competition for prizes in the Fine Art section has been confined to amateur painters. It will be seen, however, that in this branch of art the present exhibition is superior both in the number and merit of the pictures to that of last year. The sculpture and modelling is of a very high order, and the committee draw particular attention to the busts of Beethoven and Kossuth, by Mr. Burnard, whose works have on so many previous occasions graced our Hall. In the water-colour department, the piece entitled "Sun-set in the Bay of Biscay," and a Book of Sketches by the same artist, will well repay examination. The former is artistical and poetical; the latter evinces great vigour and truthfulness. A group of fruit and flowers, by a pupil of the Government School of Design, is admirably arranged and brilliantly and naturally coloured. A Book of Sketches in pen and ink possesses great merit, and indicates much power in the caricaturist. The committee have awarded the following prizes :

THE NATURAL HISTORY DEPARTMENT

was represented by Mr. Charles Fox, who read the following report of the judges:-The number of competitors in the Natural History department is in this exhibition quite equal to the average of former years. The merit of the objects is in two instances high, requiring from the judges the award of the highest prize, the first silver medal,—one to Dr. Cocks, of Devonport, for his very excellent collection of Alge, which commands great admiration from the skill shewn in displaying the specimens; the other medal to Mr. W. P. Cocks, who has produced a record of his observations as a field naturalist, on the Flora, Fauna, Geology, and Agriculture of our neighbourhood, which he has illustrated by remarks of men of kindred pursuits called to the study. To Mr. Chapman they have awarded the second bronze medal for eighteen cases of birds, chiefly those more rare to our neighbourhood, considering that he has made some advance towards an imitation of the natural position in the specimens, as shown in the Garganey Teals. To Mr. Loughrin a first prize has been awarded for his preparation of the skeleton of a porpoise, retaining in position the fins and pelvic bones. To O. W. Tancock and J. B. James, third prizes have been awarded for cases of birds' eggs, also to Alexander Fox, for a synopsis of the animal' kingdom with illustrations; and a small prize to E. M. Fox for a calendar of insects.

Judges. Miss E. A. Warren, Dr. R. C. Vigurs, Mr. F. C Bullmore, Mr. George Copeland.

Three volumes of Marine Alga, Dr. Cocks, Devonport, first silver medal. Contributions to the Fauna of Falmouth, Mr. W. P. Cocks, M.R.C.S., first silver medal. Fifteen cases of Cornish birds, P. Chapman, Falmouth, second bronze medal. Three cases of British birds' eggs, J. B. James, third prize. A collection of eggs, O. W. Tancock, Truro, third prize. A brief view of the Vertebrata and Mollusca, Alexander Fox, third prize. Calendar of insects for the first eight months of 1852, by E. Marshall Fox, prize value 7s. 6d. Skeleton of porpoise, by W. Loughrin, Polperro, first prize.

Mr. Alfred Fox then read the report on

NAVAL ARCHITECTURE.

The judges in this department award to W. Jarrett, Polperro, for a model of a block for lowering boats at sea, prize No. 4, for ingenuity of application. To R. Tregenza, Mylor, for a model of a fishing boat, with an essay to compete for the premium of £10, they award prize No. 1, for the model, but do not consider the essay (although deserving) entitled to the premium in question. Prize No. 2 is adjudged to J. Williams, Falmouth, for a model of a schooner; and a second bronze medal to M. Rundell, Devonport, for his model and drawing of a 15-feet boat, in conjunction with a block model of a boat of the same size. They also award a first bronze medal to G. Warren, Devonport, for the shear draft and profile of H. M. ship "Victory," and a third class prize to S. Brokenshar, St. Austell, for the shear draft and profile of H.M. ship "Medea." The judges feeling doubtful as to the merits of an improved screw propeller, by Mr. A. Moore, Devonport, they obtained the assistance of Mr. Sampson, engineer of the "Cornwall" steamer, and subsequently awarded the second bronze medal. The judges consider a proposed method of lowering boats, very good in theory, but they doubt its applicability, particularly in hoisting up boats in a seaway. It is recommended that the sectional model of a Falmouth pilot-boat now submitted to the notice of the judges be again brought before them at the next annual exhibition of the society. A model of a combined wood and iron frame for ships having been submitted for inspection by Mr. James Husband, surveyor to Lloyd's at Falmouth, the judges highly approve of the plan as combining strength and economy in ship-building.

Judges. Mr. Bradfield, Capt. Caddy, R.N., Lieut. Croke, R.N., Capt. Fitz Gerald, R.N., Mr. J. Husband, Lieut. James, R.N., Admiral Sullivan, C.B., Mr. John Shelly, H.M.C., Mr. Trethowan, Capt. Skene, R.N.

Model of fifteen-feet boat, with the lines from which she was built, original design by M. Rundell, shipwright H.M. dockyard, Devonport, second bronze medal. The next report was read by Mr. W. W. Rundell, the secretary, and was as follows:-The judges in the

STATISTICAL DEPARTMENT

report that a Paper " On the dwellings of the labouring population of Devonshire," which has been submitted to them, consists, principally, of copious extracts from official reports which have been already published and extensively circulated, with an account of some improved cottages erected by the Duke of Bedford at Tavistock. The object of the writer appears to be the praiseworthy one of improving the sanitary condition of the people, but he has given no results which would enable the reader to draw those comparisons between the sanitary condition of the several localities to which his extracts refer, which alone would give them any practical value. The judges, however, gladly bear testimony to the philanthropy by which he appears to have been actuated, and would recommend him in any future paper on such a subject to give his facts in a more condensed and tabular form, and to supply information as to the sanitary issue of any improved arrangements in the dwellings of the poor. The committee recommend that a third prize be given to the author of the table of observations on the temperature of the air and sea at Gwyllyn-vase for twelve months. They beg to thank Mr. Couch for his observations on the harvests in the east part of Cornwall, from 1816 to 1852, which they recommend should be published in the report of the society.

Judges. Mr. Robert Blee, Mr. John Ellis, Mr. W. J. Genn.

Observations of the temperature of the sea and air at Gwyllyn-vase, for twelve months, a third prize.

The Secretary then read the following report on the

SCHOOL PRODUCTIONS.

The judges in this class are glad to see a much bolder and freer style in some of the water-colour drawings than in former years.

Some of the studies from objects have given them great pleasure, and they hope next year to see many more sketches from Nature. If the directors of schools would sometimes suggest the drawing lesson being given out of doors, or in half-darkened rooms, where the pupils would choose and arrange their own subjects, their way would be opened into a truer appreciation of Nature, and a much higher class of art than they can ever attain by copying lithographs.
