INTRODUCTION.

THE Author of the following work has regarded the events, that have lately occurred in the Church of Scotland, as a further and a fresh development of principles and doctrines which, in other days, found a place-alternately of triumph and defeat-in the Ecclesiastical History of the country. If he has succeeded in tracing these principles and doctrines, as illustrated by past occurrences, the object of his "Historical Retrospect" will have been obtained.

If he has not altogether failed in linking the present to the past, and has done that justice which he has desired to the memorable" Ten Years" of the nineteenth century, that have passed in review before him, he will have accomplished what remained of the task, which he has undertaken with what success it is for others, not for him, to determine.
