PREFACE.

ALL persons who profess to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour, also profess that it is their duty, like him, to go about doing good. No reflecting mind will question but that much good has been accomplished by friendly personal conversation and the circulation of religious tracts. If the following pages shall induce any of the followers of the Redeemer to be more active and diligent in these departments of Christian effort, the great object the writer had in view in the preparation of this volume will be attained. We are well aware, however, that there is a diversity of gifts among Christians, and some persons find it much more easy than others to communicate their thoughts and feelings upon religious subjects to their friends, acquaintances, and strangers..

It is said of the devotedly pious Harlan Page that "he had a happy talent for addressing strangers upon the subject of personal religion." There are those, on the other hand, who find it so difficult to introduce serious conversation in the different circumstances in which they are placed, that they are, at times, almost disposed never to
