PREFACE

TO THE THIRD EDITION.

THIS edition has been brought up to date and has been very largely extended.

An attempt has been made to include in one volume of reasonable compass the law as to the contract of sale and the conveyance of land. Hence, the portion on contracts for the sale of land has been practically rewritten, considerable additions have been made to the chapters on mortgages and settlements, a section has been added on the Settled Lands Acts, and also a new chapter on conveyance by registration.

The precedents have been revised and a few added.

The precedents are based on those in "Key and Elphinstone's Compendium" and "Davidson's Concise Precedents," and the present Editor desires to repeat the acknowledgment made in the last edition of "Clark's Students' Precedents" for permission to use these works. In the chapters on contract of sale and

conveyancing, considerable use has been made of

66 Williams on the Law of Vendor and Purchaser " and

Elphinstone's Conveyancing"; and the reader is referred to those books for further details of what is here treated of in an elementary manner for students.
