SELECTION FOR THE MORNING.

Another Short Prayer for the Morning.

PSALM Ixiii. O God, thou art my God; early will I seek thee. My soul thirsteth for thee; my flesh also longeth after thee, in a barren and dry land where no water is. For thy loving-kindness is better than the life itself: my lips shall praise thee. As long as I live will I magnify thee in this manner, and lift up my hands in thy name. My soul shall be satisfied, even as it were with marrow and fatness, when my mouth praiseth thee with joyful lips. Have I not remembered thee in my bed, and thought upon thee when I was waking? Because thou hast been my helper; therefore under the shadow of thy wings will I rejoice.

O ALMIGHTY FATHER, by whose goodness and providence we have been preserved during the past night, and throughout our whole lives, into thy care and protection we commend ourselves again, as of ourselves being nothing, and having our whole dependence upon thee. Accompany us, we beseech thee, this day; and by thy grace preserve us from whatever is displeasing to thee; that the continuance of our lives being thy mercy to us, we may not offend thee in thy own gifts. Let the same grace, O God, enable us in the performance of all the duties of this day, that neither

sloth, self-love, nor ill-company, may occasion in us any omission; but that we may be faithful in them, and perform them all in the spirit of a christian, that is to thy glory. By thy watchful providence and pity, keep us from all occasions of sin, and strengthen us in such dangers and temptations as are unavoidable. Preserve us likewise from all other misfortunes and ill accidents, and suffer not the devil, or evil men, in any manner to have power over us. Give us a tender conscience; a conversation discreet and modest, patient and liberal, edifying and obliging. Set a watch before our lips, that we offend not against piety, prudence, nor charity. Preserve us from rash councils, and dangerous enterprises; make thy way plain before our face; prosper us in our several occupations; and sanctify all our actions to the advancement of thy glory and our salvation. That we, living in a constant sense of thy presence, and of the account we must soon render to Thee in judgment, may daily attain greater conformity to the spirit of thy Gospel, and come nearer to the kingdom of God. These things we beg not for our merits, but for the worthiness of thy Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Another Short Evening Prayer.

PSALM i. O Lord, our Governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world; thou that hast set thy glory above the heavens For I will consider thy heavens, even the works of thy fingers; the moon, and the stars which thou hast ordained. What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? Thou madest him lower than the angels, to crown him with glory and worship. Thou makest him to have dominion of the works of thy hands and thou hast put all things in subjection under his feet: All sheep and oxen; yea, and the beasts of the field: The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea; and whatsoever walketh through the paths of the seas. O Lord, our Governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world!

O LORD, from thy high and holy throne in the heavens, vouchsafe to look with mercy upon us the children of thy hand. Let our prayer be set forth in thy sight as the incense; and let the lifting up of our hands be as an evening sacrifice. That it hath pleased thee to add another day to the years of our life; that none of thy judgments, to which for our sins, we are liable, have fallen upon us; that by thy grace thou hast kept us from all scandalous sins, and from the dangers of an evil world; that thou hast given us occasions of doing good, and grace to make use of them; that thou hast supplied us and our friends with the necessaries

of this life, and with means of obtaining a better; accept, O God, of our unfeigned thanks for these, and for all thy mercies, from day to day bestowed upon us. Possess our hearts with such a deep sense of our obligations to, and dependence upon thee, for life, health, grace, and salvation, that religion may be our delight as well as our duty.

Lord, the frailty of man without thee cannot but fall. In all temptations therefore, we beseech thee to succor us, that no sin may ever get the dominion over us. But that we may serve thee with a quiet mind, forgive us the things whereof our conscience is afraid, and avert the judgments which we have justly deserved. Remember not the offences of our youth, and in mercy blot out those of our riper years. Pardon our sins of the day past, and of our life past, and grant that they may never rise up in judgment against us.

O most blessed Advocate, who art able to save them for ever, who come unto God by thee, seeing thou ever livest to make intercession for us, we put our cause into thy hands. Let thy power defend us; thy blood and merits plead for us: supply all the defects of our repentance: renew us day by day; and apply the precepts and doctrines of the gospel powerfully to our hearts. By thy mighty grace, O Lord, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness during the remainder of our lives, that our death may be a blessing to us, and that we may find mercy at the great day.

May the Almighty God take us, our friends and relations, our benefactors and our enemies, under his gracious protection. Give thy holy angels charge concerning us; preserve us from the prince and powers of darkness, and from all the terrors and dangers of the night; and keep us in perpetual peace and safety, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Short Prayer for Sunday Evening.

O LORD GOD, Father of mercies, from whom are derived the comforts which we now enjoy, and to whom we owe the blessed and glorious hope of everlasting life, we desire to render unto thee our evening sacrifice of prayer and praise. We acknowledge thy goodness to us during the past day; and we beseech thee to continue to us thy gracious protection during the darkness and dangers of the approaching night.

Let thy merciful ears, O Lord, be open to the prayers, praises, and thankful acknowledgments of us, thy servants, and of all thy people which have met together this day according to thy will. Accept, good Lord, of our weak endeavours in thy service; and pardon whatever any of us have thought, or spoken, or done amiss this day. Par
