the righteousness thereof, the addition of all other necessaries; thou hast commanded us to ask of thee our daily bread, and to cast our care upon thee, our heavenly Father, for such a child's portion as thy wisdom sees to be convenient, and agreeable to our condition. O give me, therefore, I beseech thee, such health, and comfort, and prosperity, as thou seest would be sanctified to my real welfare. Give me skill and ability to provide for myself; and graciously add thy blessing to my endeavors. Where I cannot supply all my own necessities, O do thou raise up friends and means to help me, that I may never be destitute of what is requisite to sustain me, and render me useful to others. Make me always mindful of my Saviour, who took upon him the form of a servant, and had not where to lay his head. And be my condition never so poor and mean, yet let me acquiesce in the distributions of thy good providence, and having food and raiment, be therewith content. In prosperity, keep me from forgetting thee; and in adversity, keep me from concluding myself to be forgotten of thee, and from all unnecessary cares, and unprofitable dejections. Add to me, O my Father, what thou knowest me further to need, and bless to me what already I have; that bodily comforts may not be to my soul occasions of falling, but encouragements to my duty, and engagements on my heart, to abound in thy love and praise. Herein may I exercise myself to have always a conscience

void of offence towards God, and towards men; yea, whatever any may justly expect from me, help me, O my God, to discharge it faithfully and acceptably. Command a blessing, Lord, upon all my honest labors and endeavors, and make them successful to promote my own and other's good. And in the want of all other supplies and succors, be thou, O God, my all in all, in life and death, and evermore, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR DIRECTION, HELP, AND BLESSING IN ANY DIFFICULT DUTY.

O ALMIGHTY GOD, who givest power to the faint, and increaseth strength to them that have no might; without thee I can do nothing, neither desiring nor proposing any thing good, nor shunning any evil; but by thy gracious assistance it is that I am enabled for the performance of every duty; my eyes are upon thee, and all my expectation is from thee; and still I desire to wait, and call, and depend upon thee. A difficult work, now I have to perform: but, O how little strength for it! All my sufficiency is of thce, who workest in us to will and to do of thy good pleasure. O thou that hast showed thyself graciously on my behalf, and brought me on hitherto, never cast me off, I beseech thee, nor abandon me over to myself, who am a reed shaken with the wind-a leaf driven to and fro; but let me be taught of God what is thy pleasure concerning me. O that my ways were

directed to please thee, that I may have the light of thy countenance shining upon me! I will go forth in the strength of the Lord God, and trust in the Lord Jehovah, in whom is everlasting strength. Make my way prosperous, and give me thy blessing and good success. Bring all needful things to my remembrance; and where I have not the presence of mind nor power of performance, O magnify thy power in my weakness; and let me go forth in thy name and strength, and speed, and prosper by thy grace and blessing. Let thy good providence so be my defence and security, and thy Holy Spirit my guide and counsellor, that I may wisely choose, and rightly manage, and successfully accomplish, the things wherein I have engaged.

Thy will be done, O Lord, however I amn pleased or disappointed; and let me ever design thy glory, whether it make for my gain or loss, in any respect in this present life. O be thou still a gracious Father to me, and a merciful provider for me; and grant me now the comfortable sense of thy acceptance of me, and thy designs of mercy toward me. Be thou pleased to take me to thy fatherly care, and preserve me from the evils into which I am prone to fall, and quicken me to the good which I am averse to perform. O establish thou the work of thy hands upon me; yea, the work of thy hands establish thou it. My God and guide, my help and strength, if thou lead me not,

I shall run into errors; if thou keep me not, I shall fall into dangers; but hold thou me up, and I shall be safe; make all that I think, and speak, and do, acceptable in thy sight. O may I both put forth myself, to stir up the grace of God that is in me, and also experience thy power and presence with me, and all the goodness of the Lord passing before me; that I may so go through this, and all the affairs of my life, that at my last reflection upon what is past, my soul may have peace, and give thy name the praise, through Jesus Christ. Amen.

A PRAYER FOR THE DIVINE DISPOSAL OF US.

LORD, thou knowest whether the having, or the being denied, the matter in question be most convenient; and therefore all I beg is, that what thou seest most expedient may be done. I ask indeed as is my duty; but I presume not to prescribe to thy heavenly wisdom. If thou seest this may prove hurtful to me, do not only deny my petitions, which proceed from ignorance and mistake; but remove far from me the very desire of that which could not be obtained without my prejudice. Give, therefore, Lord, such things, and in such measure, and at such times, as thou seest fit. Deal with me as thou knowest it necessary; for that I am well assured is best for me, which is most agreeable to thy will, and most conducive to thy glory. Appoint me any post, and use me as thy own.

Turn and change me, and my fortune, at pleasure I only beg to be qualified for thy dispensations, to use them rightly, and greatly to improve under them. For I am thy servant, devoted to thee without the least reserve. I desire not to live to myself, but to thee. O that I might be enabled faithfully and worthily to perform that homage and duty, to all which my heart is most freely and sincerely disposed, and grace for which I ask for Jesus Christ's sake. Amen.

A PRAYER BEFORE A JOURNEY.

O God, who art alike present in all places, and preservest man and beast; blessed be thy name for the knowledge thou hast given me of thy wise and merciful providence, who makest thy angels ministering spirits, for them that shall be heirs of salvation. Both at home and abroad, thou art ever with those that put their trust in thee, by the universal presence of thy good Spirit, to conduct and guide us continually; to protect and save us from all dangers and mischiefs; and, in the end, to make our way prosperous. O let the blessing of the Lord follow me at this time, and rest upon me, and preserve my going out, and my coming in. Leave, and forsake me not, O Lord, but be my God and guide this day, and in all my intended journey, and through all my life. To thee, O Lord, do I commit myself, and all that belongs to me; for I
