ADDRESS

TO THE

PUBLIC.

TH

HE most grateful acknowledgements of the favour and liberal patronage of the public are still due, as they have been for a great number of years, from the Proprietors and Editors of the LADY'S MAGAZINE, to their numerous Readers and Fair Correfpondents. The fame unremitting affiduity and care has met the fame reward, and inspires the fame gratitude.

The utility of Mifcellanies of this kind, for the promotion of knowledge and the liberal arts, need not be infifted on. They collect, as it were, into a focus, the fcattered rays of the literature of the times, exhibit to notice what might have been difregarded, and refcue from oblivion what might have been forgotten. They cherish the unfolding bud of genius, and affift its development; and, when conducted on proper principles, furnish at once profitable information and the moft liberal entertainment.

To publications of this clafs, the prefent extenfive diffufion of knowledge throughout almost every country of Europe is, perhaps, principally to be attributed, as there is fcarcely one which has not its periodical publications of different kinds. Thefe are fuited to the taste of every clafs of readers; and by diffeminating knowledge, and a love

of learning, contribute to expand the mind, and liberalize and refine the fentiments of the heart.

In the LADY'S MAGAZINE, which has now been favoured with the public approbation for three and twenty years, the interest of morality and religion have constantly been especially attended to; the entertainment and improvement of our FAIR PATRONESSES have ever been equally our object: we continually receive the most valuable communications from ladies of fuperior understanding and endowments; and we fpare neither labour nor expence to render this Mifcellany, what we truft it has ever been efteemed, a publication rather more than equal to any other of the fame kind : we shall, therefore, conclude with again expreffing our fincereft gratitude to our Readers and amiable Correfpondents, and affuring them that our utmost endeavours fhall be exerted still to merit the favours they have fo generously beftowed for fo long a series of years.
