DEUTERONOMY XVI. Observe the month of Abib, and keep the passover unto the LORD thy God: for in the month of Abib the LORD thy God brought thee 2 forth out of Egypt by night. Thou shalt therefore sacrifice the passover unto the LORD thy God, of the flock and the herd, in the place which the LORD shall 3 choose to place his name there. Thou shalt eat no leavened bread with it; seven days shalt thou eat unleavened bread therewith, even the bread of affliction; for thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt in haste that thou mayest remember the day when thou camest forth out of the land of Egypt all the days of 4 thy life. And there shall be no leavened bread seen with thee in all thy coast seven days; neither shall there any thing of the flesh, which thou sacrificedst the first day at even, remain all night until the morn5 ing. Thou mayest not sacrifice the passover within any of thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee: 6 but at the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to place his name in, there thou shalt sacrifice the passover at even, at the going down of the sun, at the 7 season that thou camest forth out of Egypt. And thou shalt roast and eat it in the place which the LORD thy God shall choose: and thou shalt turn in 8 the morning, and go unto thy tents. Six days thou shalt eat unleavened bread: and on the seventh day shall be a solemn assembly to the LORD thy God: thou shalt do no work therein."

9

Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from such time as thou be

10 ginnest to put the sickle to the corn. And thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the LORD thy God, according as 11 the LORD thy God hath blessed thee: and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite that is within thy gates, and the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are among you, in the place which the LORD thy God 12 hath chosen to place his name there. And thou shalt remember that thou wast a bondman in Egypt: and thou shalt observe and do these statutes.

13 Thou shalt observe the feast of tabernacles seven days, after that thou hast gathered in thy corn and 14 thy wine: and thou shalt rejoice in thy feast, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and thy manservant, and thy maidservant, and the Levite, the stranger, and the fatherless, and the widow, that are within thy 15 gates. Seven days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD shall choose: because the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore thou shalt surely rejoice.

16

Three times in a year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and 17 they shall not appear before the LORD empty: every

man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee. 18 Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with 19 just judgment. Thou shalt not wrest judgment; thou shalt not respect persons, neither take a gift: for a gift doth blind the eyes of the wise, and pervert 20 the words of the righteous. That which is altogether just shalt thou follow, that thou mayest live, and inherit the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. Thou shalt not plant thee a grove of any trees near unto the altar of the LORD thy God, which thou shalt 22 make thee. Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.

AMOS V. Hear ye this word which I take up against 2 you, even a lamentation, O house of Israel. The virgin of Israel is fallen; she shall no more rise: she is forsaken upon her land; there is none to raise her up. 3 For thus saith the Lord GOD; The city that went out by a thousand shall leave an hundred, and that which went forth by an hundred shall leave ten, to the house of Israel.

4

For thus saith the LORD unto the house of Israel, 5 Seek ye me, and ye shall live: but seek not Beth-el, nor enter into Gilgal, and pass not to Beer-sheba: for Gilgal shall surely go into captivity, and Beth-el shall 6 come to nought. Seek the LORD, and ye shall live; lest he break out like fire in the house of Joseph, and devour it, and there be none to quench it in Beth-el. 7 Ye who turn judgment to wornwood, and leave off 8 righteousness in the earth, seek him that maketh the seven stars and Orion, and turneth the shadow of death into the morning, and maketh the day dark with night: that calleth for the waters of the sea, and

poureth them out upon the face of the earth: The 9 LORD is his name: that strengtheneth the spoiled against the strong, so that the spoiled shall come 10 against the fortress. They hate him that rebuketh in the gate, and they abhor him that speaketh uprightly. 11 Forasmuch therefore as your treading is upon the poor, and ye take from him burdens of wheat: ye have built houses of hewn stone, but ye shall not dwell in them; ye have planted pleasant vineyards, but ye 12 shall not drink wine of them. For I know your manifold transgressions and your mighty sins: they afflict the just, they take a bribe, and they turn aside the 13 poor in the gate from their right. Therefore the prudent shall keep silence in that time; for it is an evil 14 time. Seek good, and not evil, that ye may live: and so the LORD, the God of hosts, shall be with you, as ye 15 have spoken. Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant 16 of Joseph. Therefore the LORD, the God of hosts, the Lord, saith thus; Wailing shall be in all streets; and they shall say in all the highways, Alas! alas! and they shall call the husbandman to mourning, and 17 such as are skilful of lamentation to wailing. And in all vineyards shall be wailing: for I will pass through 18 thee, saith the LORD. Woe unto you that desire the day of the LORD! to what end is it for you? the day of 19 the LORD is darkness, and not light. As if a man did flee from a lion, and a bear met him; or went into the house, and leaned his hand on the wall, and a serpent 20 bit him. Shall not the day of the LORD be darkness, and not light? even very dark, and no brightness in it I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smeli 22 in your solemn assemblies. Though ye offer me burnt offerings and your meat offerings, I will not accept them: neither will I regard the peace offerings 23 of your fat beasts. Take thou away from me the noise of thy songs; for I will not hear the melody of 24 thy viols. But let judgment run down as waters, and 25 righteousness as a mighty stream. Have ye offered unto me sacrifices and offerings in the wilderness. 26 forty years, O house of Israel? But ye have borne the tabernacle of your Moloch and Chiun your images, the star of your god, which ye made to yourselves. 27 Therefore will I cause you to go into captivity beyond Damascus, saith the LORD, whose name is The God of hosts.

21

AMOS VIII. Thus hath the Lord GoD shewed unto 2 me and behold a basket of summer fruit. And he said, Amos, what seest thou? And I said, A basket of summer fruit. Then said the LORD unto me, The end is come upon my people of Israel; I will not again 3 pass by them any more. And the songs of the temple shall be howlings in that day, saith the Lord GOD: there shall be many dead bodies in every place; they shall cast them forth with silence.

4

Hear this, O ye that swallow up the needy, even to 5 make the poor of the land to fail, saying, When will the new moon be gone, that we may sell corn? and the sabbath, that we may set forth wheat, making the ephah small, and the shekel great, and falsifying the 6 balances by deceit? that we may buy the poor for silver, and the needy for a pair of shoes; yea, and sell 7 the refuse of the wheat? The LORD hath sworn by the excellency of Jacob, Surely I will never forget any 8 of their works. Shall not the land tremble for this, and every one mourn that dwelleth therein? and it shall rise up wholly as a flood; and it shall be cast 9 out and drowned, as by the flood of Egypt. And it shall come to pass in that day, saith the Lord God, that I will cause the sun to go down at noon, and I 10 will darken the earth in the clear day: and I will turn your feasts into mourning, and all your songs into lamentation; and I will bring up sackcloth upon all loins, and baldness upon every head; and I will make it as the mourning of an only son, and the end thereof as a bitter day.

11

Behold, the days come, saith the Lord GoD, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the 12 LORD and they shall wander from sea to sea, and from the north even to the east, they shall run to and fro to seek the word of the LORD, and shall not find it. 14 for thirst. They that swear by the sin of Samaria, 13 In that day shall the fair virgins and young men faint and say, Thy god, O Dan, liveth; and, The manner of Beer-sheba liveth; even they shall fall, and never rise up again.

ISAIAH LII. Awake, awake; put on thy strength, O Zion; put on thy beautiful garments, O Jerusalem, the holy city: for henceforth there shall no more come into thee the uncircumcised and the un2 clean. Shake thyself from the dust; arise, and sit [Continued-see next page.]

1. in the beginning was the Word-see Ge. i. 1— comp. with He. i. 2, 10; also Ep. iii. 9; Col. i. 17.

and the Word was with God-the same called the voice of the Lord,' Ge. iii. 8-mine angel,' Ex. xxiii. 20-3- the angel of his presence,' who saved and redeemed, Is. lxiii 9-the messenger of the covenant,' Mal. iii. 1-the sent of the Lord, who is the Lord, Zec. ii. 8, 9, 11-described, made flesh,' Jno. i. 14, p. 48; 1 Jno. i. 1, 2.

and the Word was God- I and my Father are one,' Jno. x. 30, § 56- Christ, who is over all, God blessed for ever,' Rom. ix. 5- thought it not robbery to be equal with God,' Ph. ii. 6-see also Jno. xx. 28, § 95; He. i. 8; 1 Jno. v. 7.

the life was the light of men- a sun and shield. will give grace and glory,' Ps. lxxxiv. 11- the light of the world... the light of life,' Jno. viii. 12, § 55 arise from the dead. and Christ shall give thee light,' Ep. v. 14-see also Jno. ix. 4, 5, § 55. 5. the light shineth in darkness, &c.-light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather,' &c., Jno. iii. 19, § 12-Walk while ye have the light, lest darkness come upon you,' xii. 35, § 82- the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God,' 1 Co. ii. 14-their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament;' 2 Co. iii. 14. NOTES.

3. all things were made by him- My Father worketh hitherto, and I work,' Jno. v. 17, § 23- by him were all things created,' &c., Col. i. 16-see also 1 Co. viii. 6; Ep. iii. 9; He. i. 2, 10.

1. In the beginning. This expression is used also in Ge. i. 1. To that place John evidently has allusion here, and means to apply here to the Word,' an expression which is there applied to God. In both places it clearly means before creation,' before the world was made.' This is not spoken of the man Jesus, but of that which became a man, or was incarnate, ver. 14, p. 48. The Hebrews, by expressions like this, commonly denoted eternity. Thus the eternity of God is described Ps. xc. 2, Before the mountains were brought forth,' &c.

[That this is not said of the written word, but of the essential Word of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, is clear from all that is said from hence to ver. 14; and likewise from what this Evangelist elsewhere says of him, when he calls him the Word of Life, and places him between the Father and the Holy Ghost; and speaks of the record of the Word of God, and the testimony of Jesus, as the same thing, and represents him as a warrior and conqueror, 1 Jno. i. 1, 2; and v. 7; Rev. i. 2, 9; and xix. 11-.6. Moreover, this appears to have been spoken of Christ, from what other inspired writers have said of him under the same character.-See Lu. i. 2, § 1, p. 1; Ac. xx. 32; He. iv. 12; 2 Pe. iii. 5.]

&c.-See also Jno. iii. 13, § 12.-Comp. Ph. ii. 6, 7,
Who, being in the form of God, thought it,' &c.]
[And the Word was God. Not made a God, as he
is said hereafter to be made flesh.' As to the
personality of Jesus, there is distinctness from
the Father's, The Word was with God;' as to his
essence, there is oneness with the Father's, He was
God.' The name God is elsewhere given to Christ,
shewing that he is the supreme God.-See Rom. ix.
5; He. i. 8-12; 1 Jno. v. 20, And we know that,' &c.]
It may here be remarked, that the other Evange-
lists leave us to collect the Deity of Christ from his
miracles and doctrine, and from the various declara-
tions and displays of his glory and perfections which
they record; but John opens his gospel with an ex-
press avowal & statement of this fundamental truth.
2. The same. An emphatical repetition. The
Logos, or the Word.

3. All things. The expression cannot be limited to any part of the universe.-See Col. i. 16, For by him were all things created, that are,' &c. And He. i. 2, By whom also he made the worlds.'

4. In him was life. The life which is here spoken And the Word was with God. The term God' is of appears to be the Holy Spirit, which can be had here plainly meant of God the Father, though he is only in Christ, and whereby those who know him as not here so called, because the Evangelist had not yet the Light, are enabled to live unto God. The Spirit spoken of Christ under the title of the Son; and this is Life because of righteousness,' Rom. viii. 10. Word, who, in the close of the verse, is called God, And the life was the light of men. The Messiah was was with God; not as one God with another God, but predicted by the prophets, and described by himself as one divine person [subsistence] with another in as the light of Israel; the light to illuminate all nathe same Godhead.'-Guyse. [The fair interpretation tions; the light of men; the light of the world, Is. of being with God, in the time and circumstances viii. 20; ix. 2.-Comp. Mt. iv. 15, .6, § xvi.; Is. lx. 1, pointed out by the connexion, is, that the Word 2. Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory existed in the eternal period before all creation, of the LORD is risen upon thee;' Rev. xxi. 23. Light naturally and essentially ONE BEING with the Deity, is in all languages put for knowledge. Whatsoever yet possessing some species of relative distinction" doth make manifest is light,' Ep. v. 13-see Jno. viii. from the Father...... -See Jno. xvii. 5, § 87, 12, § 55, I am the light of the world'-and xii. 46, And now, O Father,' &c. AND THE HOLY GHOST: AND THESE THREE ARE ONE.-1 John v. 7.

[ISAIAH LII. continued.] down, O Jerusalem: loose thyself from the bands of 3 thy neck, O captive daughter of Zion. For thus saith the LORD, Ye have sold yourselves for nought; and ye 4 shall be redeemed without money. For thus saith the Lord GOD, My people went down aforetime into Egypt to sojourn there: and the Assyrian oppressed them 5 without cause. Now therefore, what have I here, saith the LORD, that my people is taken away for nought? they that rule over them make them to howl, saith the LORD; and my name continually every day is 6 blasphemed. Therefore my people shall know my name: therefore they shall know in that day that I am he that doth speak: behold, it is I.

How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him that bringeth good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth! 8 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice: with the voice together shall they sing: for they shall see eye to eye, when the LORD shall bring again Zion.

9

Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem: for the LORD hath comforted his people, 10 he hath redeemed Jerusalem. The LORD hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of our God. Depart ye, depart ye, go ye out from thence, touch no unclean thing; go ye out of the midst of her; be 12 ye clean, that bear the vessels of the LORD. For ye shall not go out with haste, nor go by flight: for the LORD will go before you; and the God of Israel will be your rereward.

13 Behold, my servant shall deal prudently, he shall 14 be exalted and extolled, and be very high. As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of 15 men so shall he sprinkle many nations; the kings shall shut their mouths at him: for that which had not been told them shall they see; and that which they had not heard shall they consider.

ISAIAH III. For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah the stay and the staff, the whole stay of bread, 2 and the whole stay of water, the mighty man, and the man of war, the judge, and the prophet, and the 3 prudent, and the ancient, the captain of fifty, and the honourable man, and the counsellor, and the cunning 4 artificer, and the eloquent orator. And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over 5 them. And the people shall be oppressed, every one by another, and every one by his neighbour: the child shall behave himself proudly against the ancient, and 6 the base against the honourable. When a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father, saying, Thou hast clothing, be thou our ruler, and let 7 this ruin be under thy hand: in that day shall he swear, saying, I will not be an healer; for in my house is neither bread nor clothing: make me not a ruler of 8 the people. For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of his glory.

him.

12 As for my people, children are their oppressors, and
women rule over them. O my people, they which
lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of
13 thy paths. The LORD standeth up to plead, and
14 standeth to judge the people. The LORD will enter
into judgment with the ancients of his people, and the
princes thereof: for ye have eaten up the vineyard;
15 the spoil of the poor is in your houses. What inean
ye that ye beat my people to pieces, and grind the
faces of the poor? saith the Lord GoD of hosts.
16 Moreover the LORD saith, Because the daughters of
Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth
necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they
17 go, and making a tinkling with their feet: therefore
the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head
of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will discover
18 their secret parts. In that day the Lord will take
away the bravery of their tinkling ornaments about
their feet, and their cauls, and their round tires like
19 the moon, the chains, and the bracelets, and the
20 mufflers, the bonnets, and the ornaments of the legs,
