fee increase in the number of persons who had
become licencees.

Restoration of good order and confidence amongst the
mining population.

Increase in the quantity of Gold brought down by
Government escort.

Objections on the part of certain of the miners against
the proposed issue of leases to companies.
LAND SALES, AND SETTLEMENT ON THE
GOLD FIELDS. Considerable land sales effected,
and a great disposition evinced by the population to
settle permanently in the gold districts.
Statement relative to the health, good order, and
success of the population at the various gold locali-
ties as named, the general yield at the old and new
workings, &c.

Quiet and good order generally prevailing; healthiness
of the population. The population of the gold
fields estimated at 84,000, and the yield of gold at
from 30,000 to 40,000 ounces per week. Opening
of new workings at Bald Hills and Tarrangower.
Arrivals and departures. Immigration of Chinese.
Satisfactory operation of the new Act for the manage-
ment of the gold fields; opposition to the enact-
ment; memorial from storekeepers.

Criminal returns. Extensive land sales. Establish-
ment of a gold assay office at Melbourne.
