XI.

SERM. " paa, thofe Things being affigned to a Quality "or Accident, which really belong to a Perfon "only; " but, fays the learned Author, “as to "what concerns the Holy Spirit, I have elsewhere "taken this Engine out of their Hands, and "caft it to the Ground, fo that none of them ❝ alive will erect it again: " Little did he imagine, that after this Triumph over the Socinians, one of his own Succeffors fhould do it for them.

7. As to their Endeavour to unfettle us from the Piety, Learning, and Humility of thofe, that are spawning out their new Schemes, 'tis not worth an Anfwer. If Comparisons upon this Head were proper they are not impoffible: There is so much Vanity in the Pretence, fuch a Contempt of those whofe Memories will be ever bleffed, and fo false a Turn given to the Course of Thinking, that we fhall leave the Argument to take the Fate of a fudden Vapour, to appear for a while, and then vanish away.

I have shown you what the Faith is that you profeffed at Baptifm, and the Neceffity of bolding it faft; let me only give you two Directions about it.

1. That Chrift, whofe Deity you plead, is able to carry you through all the Dangers of this Cause, and into all the Glory of it. He is faithful who has promifed. 'Tis he who keeps you from falling, and will prefent you before his Glory with exceeding Joy. The Trial of your Faith, which is much more precious than that of Gold, that perifhes, will be found, unto Praiseand Glory at his appearing.

2. Depend on the Affiftance of that Perfon in the divine Nature, by whom you were first enlightened, and are to be established. We have not received

received the Spirit of this World, but the Spirit SERM.
which is of God, that we may know the Things XI.
that are freely given to us of God. Thus ftand
faft in the Faith, that we lose not the Things we
have wrought; but in the Day of Chrift Jefus
may rejoice, that we have not preached in vain,
nor run in vain.
