PREFACE

TO THE THIRTEENTH EDITION.

THE first edition of this book was published in the year 1834. The author, Mr. Thomas Chitty, special pleader, of the Inner Temple, saw ten editions through the press before his death in 1878. One of the present editors was responsible for the eleventh and twelfth editions.

The book was originally designed to be a collection of forms. As the eleventh and twelfth editions appeared at times when there was no edition of Archbold's Practice' embodying the changes of procedure effected under the Judicature Acts, the editor added notes which were intended to contain a complete guide to the practice. In view of the fourteenth edition of Archbold's Practice,' and of the periodic issue of the Annual Practice,' the original design of this book has now been restored, and the book appears, in this edition, as a collection of forms with notes explaining their use. The forms have been completely revised, and the notes re-written. Under each form such rules or statutes as are applicable to it are either set out or referred to.

Before using the book the reader is requested to make a note of the additions and corrections which he will find in the Addenda, p. 875, and the Corrigenda, p. xxvii. The editors will be obliged to any gentleman who will send to them a note of any mistake or omission he may discover.

The editors desire to thank Mr. Francis A. Stringer, of the Central Office of the Supreme Court, for useful suggestions upon various points; and Mr. Gerard R. Hill, of the Inner Temple, for assistance in reading the proof-sheets.
