the sons of Henadad, with their Bons and their brethren the Levites.

Ezra v, 1, 2, 16. Then the prophets, Haggaf the prophet, and Zechariah the son of Iddo, prophesied unto the Jews that were in Judah and Jerusalem in the name of the God of Israel, even unto them. Then rose up Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, and Jeshua the son of Jozadak, and began to build the house of God which is at Jerusalem: and with them were the prophets of God helping them. Then came the same Sheshbazzar, and laid the foundation of the house of God which is in Jerusalem; and since that time even until now hath it been in building, and yet it is not finished.

Ezra vl, 14, 15. And the elders of the Jews builded, and they prospered through the prophesying of Haggai the prophet, and Zecharlah the son of Iddo: and they builded, and finished it, according to the commandment of the God of Israel, and according to the commandment of Cyrus, and Darius, and Artaxerxes king of Peria. And this house was finished on the third day of the month Adar, which was in the sixth year of the reign of Darius the king.

But Zerubbabel, and Jeshua, and the rest of the chief of the fathers of Israel, said unto them, Ye have nothing to do with us to build an house unto our God; but we ourselves together will build unto the LORD God of Israel, as king Cyrus the king of Persia hath commanded us. Then the people of the land weakened the hands of the people of Judah, and troubled them in building, And hired counsellors against them, to frustrate their purpose, all the days of Cyrus king of Persia, even until the reign of Darius king of Persia. And in the reign of Ahasuerus, in the beginning of his reign, wrote they unto him an accusation against the inhabitants of Judah and Jerusalem.

Haggai il, 2-4, 15, 16, 18, 19. Speak now to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest, and to the residue of the people, saying, Who is left among you that saw this house in her first glory? and how do ye see it now? is it not in your eyes in comparison of it as nothing? Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, saith the LORD; and be strong, O Joshua, son of Josedech, the high priest; and be strong, all ye people of the land, saith the LORD, and work: for I am with you, saith the LORD of hosts. And now, I pray you, consider from this day and upward, from before a stone was laid upon a stone in those days were, when one came the temple of the LORD; Since to an heap of twenty measures, there were but ten: when one out fifty vessels out of the press, came to the press fat for to draw there were but twenty. Consider now from this day and upward from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD's temple was laid, consider it. Is the seed yet in the barn? yea, as yet the vine, and the figtree, and the pomegranate, and the olive-tree, hath not brought forth: from this day will I bless you.

Zech. iv, 9, 10. The hands of Zerubabbel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.

Ezra v, 3-11, 13, 17. At the same time came to them Tatnai, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-bozuai, and companions, and said thus unto them, Who hath commanded you to build this house, and to make up this wall? Then said we unto them after this manner, What are the names of the men that make this building? But the eye of their God was upon the elders of the Jews, that they could not cause them to cease, till the matter came to Darius: and then they returned answer by letter concerning this matter. The copy of the letter that Tatnal, governor on this side the river, and Shethar-boznai, and his companions the Aphar sachites, which were on this side the river, sent unto Darius the king: They sent a letter unto him, wherein was written thus; Unto Darius the king, all peace. Be it known unto the king, that we went into the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which is builded with great stones, and timber is laid in the walls, and this work goeth fast on, and prospereth in their hands. Then asked we those elders, and said unto them thus, Who commanded you to build this house, and to make up these walls? We asked their names also, to certify thee, that we might write the names of the men that were the chief of them. And thus they returned us answer, saying, We are the servants of the God of heaven and earth, and build the house Ezra iv, 1-6. PROPHECY OF ITS FINAL

DESTRUCTION.

Matth. xxiv, 1, 2. And Jesus went out, and departed from the temple: and his disciples came to him, for to shew him the buildings of the temple. And Jesus said unto them, See ye not all these things? Verily I say unto you, There shall not be left here one stone upon another, that

shall not be thrown down.

Mark xiii, 1, 2. And as he went out of the temple, one of his disciples saith unto him, Master, see

what manner of stones and what buildings are here! And Jesus answering, said unto him, Seest thou these great buildings? there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

Luke xxi, 5, 6. And as some spake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly stones and gifts, he said, As for these things which ye behold, the days will come, in the which there shall not be left one stone upon another, that shall not be thrown down.

MYSTIC TEMPLE OF
EZEKIEL.

KEASUREMENT, PLAN, ETO. Ezekiel. xl, 1, 5-49. In the five and twentieth year of our captivity, in the beginning of the year, in the tentu day of the month, in the fourteenth year after that the city was smitten, in the self-same day the hand of the LORD was upon me, and bronght me thither. And behold a wall on the outside of the house round about, and in the man's hand a measuring-reed of six cubits long, by the cubit and an hand-breadth: so he measured the breadth of the building, one reed; and the height, one reed. Then came he unto the gate which looketh toward the east, and went up the stairs thereof, and measured the threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad; and the other threshold of the gate, which was one reed broad. And every little chamber was one reed long, and one reed broad; and between the little chambers were five cubits: and the threshold of the gate, by the porch of the gate within, was one reed. He measured also the porch of the gate within, one reed. Then ineasured he the porch of the gate, eight cubits; and the posts thereof, two cubits; and the porch little chambers of the gate eastof the gate was inward. And the ward were three on this side, and three on that side; they three were of one measure: and the posts had one measure on this side and on that side. And he measured the breadth of the entry of the gate, ten cubits; and the length of the gate, thirteen cubits. The space also before the little chambers was one cubit on this side, and the space was one cubit on that side; and the little chambers were six cubits on this side, and six cubits on that side. He measured then the gate from the roof of one little chamber to the roof of another: the breadth was five and twenty cubits, door against door. He made also posts

of threescore cubits, even unto the post of the court round about the gate. And from the face of the gate of the entrance unto the face of the porch of the inner-gate were fifty cnbits. And there were

Then brought he me into the outward court, and, lo, there were chambers, and a pavement made for the court round about; thirty chambers were upon the pavement. And the pavement by the side of the gates, over against the length of the gates, was the lower pavement. Then he measured the breadth, from the fore-front of the lower gate unto the fore-front of the inner court without, an hundred cubits eastward and northward. the gate of the outward court that looked toward the north, he measured the length thereof, and the breadth thereof. And the little chambers thereof were three on this side, and three on that side; and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were after the measure of the first gate: the length thereof was fifty cubits, and the breadth five and twenty cubits. And their windows, and their arches, and their palm-trees, cere after the measure of the gate that looketh toward the east; and they went up into it by seven steps; and the arches thereof were before them. And the gate of the inner court was over against the gate toward the north, and toward the east; and he measured from gate to gate an hundred cubits. After that he brought me toward the south, and behold a gate to ward the south: and he measured the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures. And there were windows in it, and in the arches thereof round about, like those windows the breadth five and twenty the length was fifty cubits, and cubits. And there were seven steps to go up to it, and the arches thereof were before them; and it had palm-trees, one on this side, and another on that side, upon the posts thereof. And there was a gate in the inner court toward the south: and he measured from gate to gate toward the south an hundred cubits. And he brought me to the inner court by the south gate: and he measured the south gate according to these measures; And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, according to these measures: and there were windows in it, and in the arches thereof

And the arches round about were five and twenty cubits long, and five cubits broad: And the arches thereof were toward the outer court; and palm-trees were upon the posts thereof; and the going up to it had eight steps. And he brought me into the inner Court toward the east: and he measured the gate according to these measures. And the little chambers thereof, and the posts thereof, and the arches thereof, were according to these measures: and there were windows therein, and in the arches thereof round about: it was fifty cubits long, and five and twenty cubits broad.
