PREFERMENTS AND MEMORANDA.

In Hilary Term, 1865, SIR EDWARD VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, one of the Judges of the Court of Common Pleas, resigned his seat and was sworn of Her Majesty's Privy Council. He was succeeded by MONTAGUE EDWARD SMITH, Esq., one of Her Majesty's Counsel, who upon being first called to the degree of the Coif, gave rings with the motto "Pro Lege." He afterwards received the honour of knighthood.

In the vacation after Hilary Term, THOMAS WEBSTER, Esq., of Lincoln's Inn, SIR THOMAS PHILLIPS, Knt., of the Inner Temple, JOSEPH BROWN, Esq., of the Middle Temple, CLEMENT MILWARD, Esq., of the Middle Temple, JAMES REDFOord Bulwer, Esq., of the Inner Temple, and HARDINGE STANLEY GIFFARD, Esq., of the Inner Temple, were appointed Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the law.

In the same vacation, BENJAMIN COULSON ROBINSON, Esq., of the Middle Temple, was called to the degree of Serjeant-at-Law, and gave rings with the motto "Ex Sese."

In the same vacation, JOHN PETER DE GEX, Esq., JOSHUA WILLIAMS, Esq., EDWARD FRANCIS SMITH, Esq., and GEORGE JESSEL, Esq., all of Lincoln's Inn, were appointed Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the law.

LORD WESTBURY resigned the office of Lord High Chancellor in July, and the Great Seal was, for the second time, placed in the hands of LORD CRanworth.

In the vacation after Trinity Term, JAMES SHAPLAND STOCK, Esq., of the Middle Temple, was appointed one of Her Majesty's Counsel learned in the law.

In the same vacation, SIR CHARLES CROMPTON resigned his seat in the Court of Queen's Bench, and died a few days after his resignation. He was succeeded by ROBERT LUSH, Esq., one of Her Majesty's Counsel, who upon being called to the degree of Serjeantat-Law, gave rings with the motto "Tenax Justitia." He was shortly afterwards knighted.
