PREFACE.

JULIUS URSINUS NIEMCEWICZ, the author of the following Tale, is one of the most distinguished men of his country, as well for his virtue and his patriotism as for his talents and knowledge. In the year 1788 he was one of the representatives of his native province of Lithuania, in the Diet of Poland, held at Warsaw, and displayed such deep reflection and animated eloquence as gave him great influence in all the proceedings of that patriotic assembly. By his co-operation with the mild, intelligent, but feeble King Stanislaus, and the more respectable part of the Diet, that constitution was framed which was secretly prepared and instantly adopted in May 1791.
