NOTICE.

The Compiler has received the kind permission of the respected Author of the "ILLUSTRATIONS" of the GOSPEL OF S. MATTHEW to make from them the Extracts published in this small Volume. The selection from so great a number and variety of Notes has been principally confined to those of a more simple and practical character; in the hope thereby of supplying any humble earnest Christian with a safe and useful companion in his meditations on that Word, which maketh "wise unto Salvation." It is the intention of the Compiler, should sufficient encouragement be given, to publish further Extracts, on the same plan, from the "ILLUSTRATIONS" of the three remaining Gospels, and of the Acts of the Apostles.

THE

GOSPEL ACCORDING TO S. MATTHEW.

The Spirit of God acted upon the minds of the sacred writers in two ways; that of Revelation, in disclosing to them things, of which they could have no knowledge; and that of Superintendence, in respect of those things, with which the writer was well acquainted from trustworthy sources of information in these they were effectually secured from error and misrepresentation by the superintendence of the Spirit of Truth. 2 Tim. iii. 16; 2 Pet. i. 20, 21; S. Luke i. 1, 4.—Bp. Blomfield.

Matthew among the Hebrews published a written Gospel in their own language, while Peter and Paul were founding the Church at Rome. After their departure (meaning, probably, out of this life), Mark, himself the disciple and interpreter of Peter, also delivered to us in writing what had been preached by Peter; and Luke, the follower of Paul, recorded in a book the Gospel preached by him. Afterwards, John, the disciple of the Lord, who had leant on His breast, himself also residing at Ephesus, set forth a Gospel.-S. Irenæus.
