sums of money by way of mortgage, or any other equitable charge, including any lien for unpaid purchase money; and the devisee or legatee or heir shall not be entitled to have such sum or sums
discharged or satisfied out of any other estate of the testator or 15 intestate unless (in the case of a testator) he shall within the
meaning of the said Acts have signified a contrary intention; and such contrary intention shall not be deemed to be signified by a charge of or direction for payment of debts upon or out of residuary
real and personal estate or residuary real estate. 20 2. This Act shall not extend to Scotland.

HEREAS the several Acts mentioned in column one of the
schedule to this Act are, to the extent specified in column two of that schedule, limited to expire on the thirty-first day of December one thousand eight hundred and seventy-seven:
And whereas it is expedient to provide for the continuance as in this Act mentioned of such Acts, and of the enactments amending the same :
Be it therefore enacted by the Queen's most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and 10 Temporal, and Commons, in this present Parliament assembled, and by the authority of the same, as follows:
1. This Act may be cited as the Expiring Laws Continuance Short title. Act, 1877.
2. The Acts mentioned in column one of the schedule to this Continuance 15 Act, in so far as they are temporary in their duration, shall, to the of Acts in
extent in column two of the said schedule mentioned, be continued until the thirty-first day of December one thousand eight hundred and seventy-eight, and any enactments amending or affecting the
enactments continued by this Act shall, in so far as they are 20 temporary in their duration, be continued in like manner.
