Pay, taels 500 per mensem (equivalent to about £120 at the present rate of exchange), with first-class passage to Shanghai, under an agreement for three years, renewable thereafter in the event of satisfactory services. The value of the tael at the present rate of exchange is about taels 4 equals £1; exchange is, however, subject to fluctuation, and this rate should be considered abnormal; the normal pre-war rate was taels 8 equals £1.
