JURISDICTION. The jurisdiction of this Court extends to all treasons, murders, felonies, and misdemeanors, including all places within ten miles of St. Paul's Cathedral, and it comprehendsIN ESSEX. The Parishes of Barking-East Ham-West Ham-Little Ilford-Low Layton, Walthamstow Wanstead Woodford, and Chingford.

Assessed Taxes.

N.B.-By an Act passed June, 1840, an additional duty of 107. per cent. is charged on the Assessed Taxes, excepting the Inhabited House Duty Tax, computed on the total amount of the Assessment.

Any dog belonging to Her Majesty or the Royal Family; persons discharged from the duty on houses, on account of poverty, having only one dog, not being a greyhound, hound, pointer, setting-dog, spaniel, lurcher, or terrier. Persons having a dog or whelp not six months old, at the time of returning the list; any person compounding for a number of hounds by him kept for any year, on payment of the sum of £36. And where two or more join to keep such hounds, and not compound, they are chargeable for each hound. Dogs wholly kept and used in the care of sheep, or cattle, provided no such dog shall be a greyhound, hound, pointer, setting-dog, spaniel, lurcher or terrier.

Carriages with less than four wheels kept for the owner's use, and not for hire; the cost of which did not exceed 211. provided such carriage have the owner's name and address in full, written in black letters on a white ground, or white letters on a black ground, such letters being at least one inch in height, and of a proportionate width. Carriages with less than four wheels, built wholly of wood and iron, with any spring or springs, wholly or in part of metal, kept as common stage carts, and used for purposes of husbandry, or carriage of goods, or in the course of trade, provided the name and address in full, occupation or calling of the owner, and also the words "Common Stage Cart," are painted thereon, in the same manner as above described. DUTY ON DOGS.

In case of any person omitting to take out the proper certificate, the Surveyor of Taxes will bring him into charge, and the assessment must be double in every case.

By 1 & 2 Will. IV. cap. 32, persons licensed to deal in game are to take out a certificate, charged with a duty of 21.; but certificated persons may sell game to licensed dealers, if paying a duty of 31. 13s. 6d.

The penalty for selling game (not being duly licensed) is 57., and this penalty is also incurred by the buyer of game from an unlicensed person.

Note. By the 3rd Vict. c. 17, s. 8, an additional duty of 10 per cent. is imposed on all assessments made after 6th April, 1840, except on carriages let to hire with horses, and chargeable to the duty of 31.
