And now, before his father God,
Pleads the full merit of his blood.

2. Repeated crimes awake our fears,
And justice arm'd with frowns appears;
But in the Saviour's lovely face
Sweet mercy smiles, and all is peace.
3. Hence then ye black, despairing thoughts,
Above our fears, above our faults,
His powerful intercessions rise
And guilt recedes, and terror dies.
4. In every dark, distressful hour,
When sin and Satan join their power:
Let the dear hope repel the dart,
That Jesus bears us on his heart.

5. Great Advocate, Almighty Friend-
On him our humble hopes depend:
Our cause can never, never fail,
For Jesus pleads, and must prevail.

Hymn 95. с. м.

ITH joy we meditate the grace
Of our High-Priest above :

His heart is made of tenderness,
His bowels melt with love.
2. Touch'd with a sympathy within,
Heknows our feeble frame;
He knows what sore temptation's mean,
For he hath felt the same.

3. He in the days of feeble flesh.

Pour'd out strong cries and tears;. And in his measure feels afresh, What ev'ry member bears.

4. He'll never quench the smoaking flax,
But raise it to a flame';

The bruised reed he never breaks,
Nor scorns the meanest name.

5. Then let our humble faith address
His mercy and his pow'r;
We shall obtain deliv'ring grace
In the distressing hour.

Hymn 96. с. м.

KNOW that my Redeemer lives,.
And ever prays for me:

A token of his love he gives,
A pledge of liberty.

2. Thy love I soon expect to find,
In all its depth and height,
To comprehend th' eternal mind,
And grasp the Infinite.

3. When God is mine, and I am his,
Of paradise possess'd,
I taste unutterable bliss,
And everlasting rest..

Hymn 97. P. M.

LORY be to God on high,
God whose glory fills the sky::

Peace on earth to man forgiv'n,
Man the well belov'd of heav'n.
2. Sov'reign Father, Heav'nly King,.
Thee we now presume to sing;
Glad thine attributes confess,
Glorious all and numberless.

3. Hail! by all thy works ador'd;
Hail! thou everlasting Lord;
Thee with thankful hearts we prove,
Lord of pow'r and God of love!

4. Christ, our Lord and God we own;
Christ, the Father's only Son;
Lamb of God for sinners slain,
Saviour of offending man,

5. Bow thine ear, in mercy bow,
Hear, the world's atonement thou;
Jesus, in thy name we pray,
Take, O take our sins away.

6. Pow'rful Advocate with God,
Justify us by thy blood!
Bow thine ear, in mercy bow,
Hear the world's atonement thou..

Hymn 98. P. M.

RISE, my soul, arise,
Shake off thy guilty fears,

The bleeding Sacrifice

In my behalf appears.
Before the throne my surety stands;
My name is written on his hands.

2. He ever lives above,

For me to intercede;
His all-redeeming love,

His precious blood to plead;
His blood aton'd for all our race,
And sprinkles now the throne of grace..
3. Five bleeding wounds he bears,
Receiv'd on Calvary:
They pour effectual pray'rs,

They strongly speak for me: Forgive him, O forgive, they cry, Nor let that ransom'd sinner die.. 4. The Father hears him pray, His dear anointed One;

He cannot turn away

The presence of his Son:
His spirit answers to the blood,
And tells me, I am born of Gods.

5. My God is reconcil'd,

His pard'ning voice I hear;

He owns me for his child,
I can no longer fear.
With confidence I now draw nigh,
And Father, Abba Father! cry.

Hymn 99. Р. М.

ESUS, my great High Priest,
Offer'd his blood and died;

My guilty conscience seeks
No sacrifice beside.

• His powerful blood
Did once atone;
And now it pleads
Before the throne.

2. My advocate appears,
For my defence on high;
My Father, bows his ear,
And lays his taunder by..
Not all that hell*
Or sin can say,
Shall turn his heart,
And love away.

Hymn 100. L. M.

HO shall the Lord's elect condemn?
'Tis God that justifies their souls,

And mercy, like a mighty stream,
O'er all their sins divinely rolls.

2. Who shall adjudge the saints to hell?
"Tis Christ that suffer'd in their stead;
And the salvation to fulfil,
Behold him rising from the dead.

3. He lives! he lives! and sits above,
Forever interceding there :

Who shall divide us from his love,
*Or what should tempt us to despair ?
4. Shall persecution or distress,

Famine, or sword, or nakedness ?
He that hath lov'd us, bears us through,
And makes us more than conqu'rors too.
5. Faith hath an overcoming pow'r,
It triumphs in the dying hour;
Christ is our life, our joy, our hope,
Nor can we sink with such a prop.
6. Not all that men on earth can do,
Nor pow'rs on high, nor pow'rs below,
Shall cause his mercy to remove,
Or wean our hearts from Christ our love.

Hymn 101. P. M.

ATHER of

everlasting grace,

[ocr errors]

Thy goodsess and thy truth we praise,
Thy goodness and thy truth we prove;

Thou hast in honour of thy son

The gift un peakable sent down,

The spir't of life, and power, and love;

2. Thou hast the prophecy fulfill'd, The grand orig'nal compact seal'd,

For which thy word and oath were join'd

The promise to our fallen head,
To ev'ry child of Adam made,

Is now pour'd out on all mankind.

3. The purchas'd comforter is given, For Jesus is return'd to heaven,

To claim, and then the grace impart :
