THE great inconvenience arising from there not being any General Index to the Acts of the Legislature passed since the publication of the compilation of 1884, induced me in September, 1895, to offer my services to prepare such an Index, with the Chronological Tables now included therewith. The Legislature having, by the Act of 1895, No. 24, authorized the acceptance of my offer, the work was at once proceeded with; but-partly in consequence of the prolongation of the Legislative Session of 1895-96 to the end of January, 1896, and partly from the great amount of labour involved in the preparation of the Index and Tables, the completed manuscript could not be forwarded to London to be printed until the present month. In the Alphabetical Index, and in some of the notes inserted in the Chronological Tables, the method adopted for the citation of the Acts passed since 1883 is to quote first the year, then in roman numerals the session (if there has been more than one), then the number of the Act, and, when necessary, the section. For example, section 2 of THE OFFENCES AGAINST PROPERTY ACT, 1892, is cited as-1892 (iii)...10, s. 2. Where the year is followed by a number only, that indicates the number of the Act. Thus, THE EXPLOSIVES ACT, 1884, is cited as-1884...12. Where a reference is followed by a number only, that indicates the page in the compilation of 1884.
