Now as his people are his by a spiritual qualification, you, by looking to the natural flesh only, "do err not knowing the scriptures."

Hitherto you have despised and rejected him, your own Saviour who condescended to take on him the flesh of the offspring of David, for the purpose of offering himself up for all believers, it matters not of what nation of which they are;-by which you shut yourselves out from the spiritual promises of a spiritual God of a spiritual Son; who is the spiritual Saviour of all spiritual believers ;—and, by your refusing his spirituality, how can your natural relationship avail any thing, when, by your own dividing spirituality from his covenant, you lose all the good part and lot in his promises? But the denunciation for contempt, error, and disobedience, is all that is of force on the natural remnant: for the grief, too, of all the world.

Now I declare, that there is but one remnant that, by the aforegoing arguments, will be saved. For the prophet's assertion settles this matter: and we conclude that this word has reference to all the nations of the world. For if some part of each nation be gathered by the Saviour of believers, some one will say, there is demonstrated many remnants; but I do not wish that natural inference, since it would not be so spiritually. For these of all nations are gathered together as one remnant: and this is the remnant that will be saved.

You then, who believe Moses and the prophets-who testify of our Saviour, are a part of the remnant; as well as your being a remnant of your own nation.

But you are not a spiritual remnant while you refuse credence to your own

prophets; who were all spiritual in mind, and had no presumptive confidence in the flesh.

For if remaining, then not believing, you are not as yet elected as a remnant for salvation; or else our spiritual is not divine spiritual: for it is by believing in him who is the Divine Spirit, and not in the natural flesh of Abraham only. For again, if your faith be judged by its credence of Abraham's posterity, it will be found defective of all that is natural. For if you, as a nation, put the Messiah to death, which we believe, then you destroyed your relationship to him, and co-heirship; and cut yourselves off, who before were the natural branches of Israel; and put an end to your fancied monopoly of the riches of the Son and Heir; and to your legal heirship. Because your kil ling the heir could by no means give

you any right to inherit these riches; but rather, miserable destruction. But He raised him up again from the dead in three days, during which you could get hold of nothing of these riches, which he inherits as heir eternal. And so your faith is neither divine spiritual, nor morally natural; and is no faith, but is faithlessness and disbelief;that is,—yours-who will not believe in the " Prophet" whom the Lord God has "raised up," as Moses tells you, "like unto himself." And this is the very one whom you say, that you will not "hear,"-to this very time.

Therefore we infer, that there is now a universal Remnant, formed, by selection to faith, from all the nations of the world. But this remnant is eternally fixed as divine spiritual.

So also there are two kinds of spiritual: first, divine spiritual, which is

truth and right; and then, evil spiritual, which is anti-scriptural, and wrong. This is the knowledge of good and evil. To the believer in the sacrifice for sin, when the only Saviour King our Lord offered himself, once for all, then certainly innocence; but to the rejectors of this atonement,— most certainly branding guilt, bringing swift vengeance, and dispersion to the four winds.
