CHAPTER VII. O SAD delusion !-obstinacy so great!- DELUDED offspring of the natural seed of Abraham; but without his spiritual faith! O natural Remnant! Natural remnant! but in conduct, how most transgressingly, of all kindred laws, feelings, and affections ;—of every law moral and divine ; — how, most transgressingly, unnatural! The law says: "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour: and, "Thou shalt not kill." In opposition to these, you took the innocent into custody, not openly, but by the hands of the betrayer; and when declared innocent by your own tributary ruler, or rather usurper; and by the representative of the world's rulers at that age of the world, that is, by Pontius Pilate; in opposition to these, you suborned false witnesses to accuse him; and in opposition to these, you crucified him with wicked hands. This innocent Prophet, Priest, and King, who was of your own flesh; your only hope, and your only friend; -you have betrayed with gold,-sworn falsely against his life, and mockingly and cruelly put to death. Remember Cain, when the voice of his brother's blood cried to God from the earth. If now you will return to him whom you then murdered,-to him whom God, his father, raised up from the dead; if now you will return, he will receive you, and forgive all your sin. Only "look on him whom you have pierced," and he will tell you what you shall do. Then that branding mark of murder he will erase: and he will accept you by faith, to partake of the blessings of his eternal kingdom. O repentant Remnant of the house of Israel! do you indeed find that there is a Son of God, who is your spiritual deliverer? Do you in fact find that his kingdom is divine spiritual ? So believed the Patriarchs; so believed Moses; and so believed the prophets, as their voices all declare. This is the faith of the faithful in all ages of believing in the Lord our God. CHAPTER VIII. O MOST absurd to think eternal thrones, WHAT absurdity to imagine that His kingdom was a temporal one only, since that is so impossible! For of whom are his subjects to consist? and where on earth could be the place of his throne? You will say to me at Jerusalem ; and his subjects would of course be his F |
