progress; our missionary collection is 831 crowns more than it was last year. The progress of Methodism in Denmark cannot be calculated merely by the aid of figures, for its influence reaches wider year by year, and all religious movements here bear traces of its influence. As town after town has a missionary placed in it our cause will be better known; and to know Methodism is to love and respect it.

Regarding the various places, I will mention some that have been fruitful fields during the past year.

Copenhagen. Here, at our Annual Meeting, we had 505 members and probationers, who are divided into two congregations, St. Paul's and Bethania. A third preaching-place, Elim, capable of holding 200 persons, has been opened during the year. St Paul's congregation uses our big church, which will hold over a thousand people, and there has been a good attendance during the year. Brother O. Olsen, of Norway, was pastor in charge last year. Brother Thaarup has now been appointed there. Brother A. Christensen is in charge of the Bethania congregation, This congregation, consisting of only 102 members, is most self-sacrificing and generous. It pays 1,500 crowns toward the pastor's salary and house and hall rent, besides paying all its current expenses. On the whole, both the Copenhagen congregations are willing to make great sacrifices for the advancement of the kingdom of God. The total collections of the two Copenhagen congregations amount to 8,540 crowns.

Frederikshavn. This town, containing about 4,000 inhabitants, is the second northernmost in Denmark. It is one of our more recent stations, but notwithstanding this we have here 343 members and probationers. As the town is a sea-port on the Cattegat, between Denmark and Sweden, a large number of the inhabitants are fishermen, among whom we have several members. Their fishing-boats are named John Wesley, Fletcher, Moody, etc. Our cause has met with much opposition here, but the Lord has been with us, and the church is in a flourishing condition. The total collections have amounted to 4,393 crowns. We have a good church and parsonage here.

Veile. Here we have one of our oldest churches, from which most of our other churches in Zylland have sprung. We have here 304 members and probationers. The last year has been rich in blessings; many have been converted to God and have united with the Church. We have a good mission-house in Veile, which also contains the parsonage and a dayschool, but we are compelled to enlarge the house, so as to provide room for all who attend the meetings; there are often more attendants at the services than can be seated in the chapel. We hope, therefore, to be able during the year to make the house sufficiently large to accommodate about 700 persons. The total collections amount to 2,984 crowns.

Odense. Here the congregation, including probationers, consists of 189 members. It is but a few years since we began our Mission in this town, and God has in this comparatively short time greatly blessed the work to the salvation of souls. Odense is the third largest town in Denmark, with a population of 32,000. We have here a beautiful and convenient church,

"The Dollner Memorial Church," which can accommodate 600 persons. The church has during the year been well filled, and about 75 souls have been converted to God. Praise the Lord! The total collections amounted to 3,611 crowns.

Svendborg. We have here a good congregation, consisting of 115 members, and a good church and parsonage. The natural surroundings of Svendborg are very beautiful, and it is my hope that hundreds of souls in this lovely spot will be won for Christ during the coming year. The total collections amount to 3,261 crowns.

Aarhus. The work here is new, and we have hitherto been obliged to occupy small and indifferent houses, which fact has had a rather unfortunate influence on our work in this the second largest town in Denmark, with a population of 34,000 inhabitants. The work has prospered in spite of these drawbacks, especially during this last year; 21 persons have been converted to God, and the church now numbers 60 members and 13 probationers. We need a good church here in order that our cause may have rapid progress. The Danes are a church-respecting people, and are not fond of hearing the word preached in an ordinary dwelling-house. It is especially difficult to get them to come to our meetings for the first time. Had we churches every-where we should be better able to get people to attend our meetings. The attendance upon our meetings, however, increased considerably last year, and when I was there at the first Quarterly Conference the room was full of attentive listeners.

Of Aalborg the same can be said as of Aarhus. Athough we have here an excellent rented hall, our cause would stand on a very different footing if we were in possession of a church. We have in Aalborg 60 members and 40 probationers. The last year has shown good results, as 70 persons have been converted to God and a large number of them are ready to unite with the Church.

At the other stations the progress has been small, but it is my hope and prayer that matters here will undergo a change, so that hundreds of conversions may be reported from these places at our next Annual Meeting.

Sunday-school work is pursued with great energy and success in all our stations. About 3,000 children attend our schools every Sunday, and although many efforts are made by the state Church to destroy these schools, the number of pupils increases yearly.

Our theological school in Copenhagen has prepared the first five young men, who have taken a thorough two years' course of study, at the close of which a public examination was held from May 20 to 22, showing excellent results. The five young men are already employed in the mission field, and I trust that they will prove a blessing to the Church. We began the school session last year with an empty exchequer; and although the expenses during the year have amounted to 2,301 crowns, we have not lacked money, the voluntary contributions having always come at the right time. The school has been helped by a loan of 927 crowns to the students by the Board of Education, for which I tender our heart-felt thanks. The new school session began on the 1st of August with six new pupils, who,

we trust, will be enabled to complete the course of study. We trust we shall be aided by the Lord and obtain the help of kind friends, and we expect to realize our hope.

The financial condition of our churches every-where is good. Our total collections amount to 36,277 crowns, which is 7,899 crowns more than last year. Our missionary collection amounted to 3,144 crowns, which is 831 crowns more than last year. Fourteen thousand six hundred and sixteen crowns have been collected toward self-support, of which sum 6,811 crowns have been expended on preachers' salaries. It is our endeavor to work more and more toward self-support. The Lord must help us also in this matter.

Our Book Concern makes steady advance, and our papers, Kristelig Talsmand and Sondagsskolen, have a comparatively large circulation. We have during the year printed and published altogether 1,455,000 pages of matter.

Peace and love rule in our churches, and the best feeling exists among our preachers. Praise God!

Our Annual Meeting in Odense in June was most blessed, and our beloved Bishop Warren's presence there most encouraging. His fatherly advice and the lively interest he showed for our cause will long be held in thankful remembrance.

It is with joy and thankfulness to God that I write this report. I rejoice that God is with us, and I am thankful that the Lord has considered me worthy to obtain a place in the Methodist Church, whose teachings and practice I love with all my heart; and I am grateful to the mother-Church in America, and its blessed Missionary Society, for the interest which they manifested in my dear father-land, which is in such sore need of true and living Christianity.

INDIA.

Commenced in 1856.

BISHOP THOBURN HAS EPISCOPAL SUPERVISION.

The North India Conference has been afflicted this year, like some of our other Missions, by the loss of laborers. Rev. A. J. Maxwell, agent of the Lucknow Publishing House, was stricken with cholera while at his office in the morning, and was taken to his home, where he passed to his rest the same evening. This is the first death of a male missionary in the field for over thirty years. Other missionaries have been removed by sickness, so that the force is greatly weakened. The year, however, has been one of success. Over six thousand adults and children have received baptism, and many new centers of work have been opened. The number of inquirers, however, is much greater than the number baptized, so that the Conference hopes for still greater things in the future.

One very encouraging feature of this year's work is worthy of note, namely, the systematic training of the young people through the "Epworth League" and the "Bands of Ready Workers" for regular voluntary work for Jesus. Hundreds of voluntary unpaid laborers, young men and young women, are witnessing for Christ weekly. Special efforts, also, are every-where made to teach and to lead on to a clear, definite experience all who are baptized.
