Clinical Practice.

The Royal Infirmary and Royal Hospital.

The Practices of the two Institutions are amalgamated for the purpose of Clinical Instruction, giving a total of over 500 Beds for the treatment of Medical, Surgical, and Special Cases.

The annual number of patients passing through the wards of the two institutions is over 6,000, while those attending as out-patients number over 45,000.

The Medical and Surgical staffs attend daily and give Clinical instruction in the wards and out-patient rooms at stated times.

Clinical Lectures in Medicine and in Surgery are given weekly at stated times, attendance upon which is required by those requiring to be signed up.

Instruction in the practical administration of Anaesthetics is given at either Institution by the Anaesthetists.

The Hospital accommodation available for Clinical work ensures that each individual student taking out Hospital practice at this School, has abundant opportunities for the observation and study of diseases of all kinds, and that those who teach have ample and varied material wherewith to illustrate their teaching.

The relative number of Hospital beds to students is a large one. Each student is thereby enabled to acquire a practical knowledge such as is often impossible where such a relationship does not exist. At every point in the student's career, from the time he begins Hospital practice, this ideal of a practical personal knowledge is held in view. Before being permitted to hold any higher appointment, each student must, for a period of at least two months, act

as Dresser in the Casualty Rooms, attending daily from 10 a.m. to I p.m., and treating minor accidents and emergencies under the supervision of the Casualty Officer. The practical experience thus acquired is particularly valuable, for, in addition to the ordinary casualties and emergencies common to any large city, the heavy trades of Sheffield provide a very large number of more severe accidents, the majority of which come direct to the casualty rooms.

In their later appointments also, as Clinical Clerk, Dresser, or in the special departments, all students have a large number of cases allotted to them personally. Dressers assist the Surgeons at operations.

The opportunities for acquiring a thorough practical knowledge of Obstetrics are exceptionally great; not only is the number of ordinary cases which may be attended practically unlimited, but all the rarer varieties of difficult labour are attended by the student in the Jessop Hospital, under the immediate supervision of the staff.

Resident Hospital Appointments.

Students taking out Hospital Practice in Sheffield, have unusually good facilities for obtaining Resident Hospital posts after qualification. There are seventeen resident posts in connection with the Hospitals recognised for Clinical teaching, and although these are not reserved to local students, yet a very considerable proportion are usually held by them.
