The Degrees given in Mining are those of Bachelor, Master and Doctor of Engineering. For Ordinances for the degree of Bachelor of Engineering in Mining, see p. 495.

Diploma Course.

This course is arranged for students who wish to obtain University instruction concurrently with practical experience at a colliery, and is recommended to those who wish to become Mining Engineers or colliery managers.

The course has been approved by the Home Secretary under Section 9 of the Coal Mines Act, 1911, and the Diploma enables a student to sit for the examination for a colliery manager's certificate after five years' total training, including the time spent at the University, provided that his practical experience has been of a satisfactory nature.

The regulations for the Diploma will be found on page 41, the following is a summary :

The course consists of three or four six months' sessions from October to March inclusive, during

which time the student spends all his time at the University. The six summer months are spent at a colliery. It is recommended that from six to twelve months should be spent at a colliery before entering on the course.

Whether three or four years are occupied depends on the previous education of the student. Four years students must pass or be exempted from the Entrance Examination of the Faculty of Engineering, particulars of which will be found on page 483. Students wishing to take the course in three years must pass an examination in Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics held in June or September each year, or be exempted from such examination under regulation 5 (page 503). The standard of this examination is that of the Matriculation in these subjects.

The subjects of study in the Diploma Course will be found in the time tables on pages 548 to 555.

Fees-£16 16s. per session.

Part-Week Course.

A course involving attendance at the University for only two days a week throughout the session is arranged for those who are unable to take the Diploma Course. While this course will cover the subjects essential for the Colliery Manager's Certificate under the Coal Mines Act, it does not cover certain branches of Engineering and Science which while of great importance to the modern Mining Engineer are not involved in the Home Office Examinations.
