HANDBOOK OF TRAVEL-TALK;

4

A Collection of QUESTIONS, PHRASES, and VOCABULARIES, intended to serve as Interpreter to English Travellers in Germany, France, or

Italy, or to Foreigners visiting England.

He that travelleth into a country before he hath some entrance into the Language, goeth to school, and not to travel.'-Bacox.

By the EDITOR of the HANDBOOKS for GERMANY, FRANCE, and SWITZERLAND.

The Compiler of the above small volume, having remarked the singular unfitness for prac tical use of the common run of works calling themselves Interpreters, Manuals of Conversation,' and the like-in which the Traveller usually finds everything except what he wants— has been induced to prepare a Handbook adapted strictly to supply the wants of Travellers,

He does not pretend, as some do, to enable Englishmen abroad to talk a foreign language withont having opened a grammar beforehand. That would be an absurdity. A previous knowledge of the elements and construction of a language is absolutely needed before any successful attempt can be made to speak it. But even a scholar, who is able to read foreign works with tolerable facility, finds himself at a loss when he comes to reduce his knowledge to practice, and to attempt the colloquial phraseology of the railway or road-side. Still more difficult is it to attain fluency in technical phrases, or the terms belonging to any particular art, science, or profession.

In this little book an attempt has been made to supply the Traveller with the words and sentences which, the Editor knows from experience, are required on a journey-free from the puerilities and vulgar nonsense which usually supply their place in similar works. Hitherto

such essential topics as Custom-house - Railway - Passport Office Coach Office- Tabicd'Hôte-and many more-have scarcely been alluded to in books of this class,

The new Edition of 1865 has undergone a thorough revision by competent Professors of the Three Foreign Languages, useful additions have been made, and the Italian words have been accentuated.

A NARRATIVE

OF

AN EXPEDITION TO THE ZAMBESI

AND ITS TRIBUTARIES:

And of the Discovery of Lakes Shirwa and Nyassa, during the Years 1858-64.

BY DAVID AND CHARLES LIVINGSTONE.

It has been my object in this work to give as clear an account as I was able of tracts of country previously unexplored, with their river systems, natural productions, and capabilities; and to bring before my countrymen and all others interested in the cause of humanity the misery entailed by the slave-trade in its inland phases; a subject on which I and my companions are the first who have had any opportunities of forming a judgment. . . . I would hope that, whatever my descriptions want in clearness, or literary skill, may in a measure be compensated by the novelty of the scenes described, and the additional information afforded on that curse of Africa, and that shame, even now, in the nineteenth century, of an European nation, the slave-trade.'-Preface.

THE ARGOSY: a New Monthly Adventure. Price Gd.

[ocr errors]

In launching 'THE ARGOSY,' her Owners and Captain anticipate the question, Are there not enough of these light Magazine craft afloat already? They answer that their venture will not run into collision with any: she will sail the high seas of literature, and bring ber freight from the realms of imagination and fancy. The products of these regions make a market for themselves,-their gems, and silks, and spices creating the desires which they satisty.

The Projectors of THE ARGOSY' will not put in a claim to the prize of King Xerxes for the Invention of a new pleasure, or for the discovery of any new world of entertainment. They are aware how hard it is to find 'such wit as ne'er has been,' and they therefore decline to give promissory notes, as is the order of the day, on an El Dorado of wit and wisdom. They are not going in search of that golden fleece, 'The great want of the age,'--an expedition which generally begins with much cry,' and ends with 'little wool.' Nor will they attempt to introduce the very Oriental business of amusing the unamusable. Enough if they succeed in making the thoughtful merrier, and the unthinking wiser.

THE ARGOSY' will address itself alike to the travelled and the untravelled;-to the former seeking to recall the delight of scenes to which distance only lends enchantment, and to the latter to furnish pictures vivid enough to stand in the place of realities. In story-telling it will welcome all who can create new worlds of lofty hopes, and fancies chaste and noble,' and who can clothe incidents of natural construction with the real interest of human action and passion. In its essays it will try to display the lights and shadows of our age, bring out its harmonies and discords, aid its aspirations, and laugh at its absurdities. And it is intended that its every page, whether prose or verse, shall attest the presence of that genial poetic spirit, from which the best fruits in any gracious art may be anticipated. But however much might be said here, it would still require to be left to 'THE ARGOSY' itself to make friends or to lose them. The public will therefore be pleased to consider themselves introduced to this new literary adventure; and then all is done that a Prospectus can do.

Praying for a fair wind of popular favour, THE ARGOSY' will start on the first day of December, in the year of grace 1865.

ENGLAND. A History of the Foundation, Endowments, and Discipline of the Chief Seminaries of Learning in England; including Eton, Winchester, Westminster, St. Paul's, Charterhouse, Merchant Taylors', Harrow, Rugby, Shrewsbury, &c.; with Notices of Distinguished Scholars. By HOWARD STAUNTON, Esq. With numerous Illustrations. 1 vol. 8vo., handsomely bound in cloth, price 125. [Now ready.

When a good subject falls into competent hands it is an excellent thing for the subject, the author, and for the public also. This has happened in the case of the volume of which Mr. Staunton is partly the compiler and partly the writer. His plan is to give an historical chapter on each school; then follows one entitled "Statistical and Miscellaneous;" and this is succeeded by a record of the distinguished scholars who have sprung from, or been connected with, each foundation. Past history is very fully treated, present history succinctly detailed, and future history shadowed out in reference to the reports and recommendations of those very useful and troublesome personages, the members of the Royal (and reforming) Commission. The book, therefore, is as full of solid matter as of gossiping narrative and pleasant anecdote. As a handbook to our great schools Mr. Staunton's volume will have a wide class of readers.'-Athenæum.
