If Captain Hall should survive the perils of the journey on which he is now engaged, we are convinced he will bring home some news, be it good or bad, about the Franklin expedition. He can hardly be expected back before the autumn of 1866. But if he has gone, he has left us his vastly entertaining yolumes, which contain much valuable information, as we have said, concerning the Esquimaux tribes. We have not dealt with this part of the volume, preferring to let Capt. Hall speak for himself about the, to Englishmen, most interesting portions of his travels. But even apart from the history of the discovery and the description of the Frobisher relics, these volumes are the best that we have ever met with concerning the people and things to be found among "the thick-ribb'd ice."'-Standard. The pen of Wilkie Collins would fail to describe in more life-like terms of horror the episode of the cannibal crew escaped from a whaler who boarded the "George Henry" on the outward passage of that ship. Mr. Murray has done his work well: a clear type, uncrowded page, and many beautiful woodcuts, make this at first, sight a very pretty edition of the New Testament; it will be found, on closer view, to be something more. 'In a well-known essay on the Interpretation of Scripture we are told that "educated persons are beginning to ask, not what Scripture may be made to say, but what it does (say)." The same question has in fact been asked more or less earnestly for eighteen centuries, and the answers, as might have been expected, have been many and various. It is of course mere folly to look for a complete and uniform interpretation of Holy Scripture, to which all men may assent. Such an expectation, if ever entertained, is but one among many forms of the weak craving for an infallible guide. 'But in our own day there is certainly a growing desire to let the Bible speak for itself and interpret itself, and we are glad to see this salutary principle heartily recognised in the work before us. The editors, we are told, have wished "to avoid the fault of inviting attention to the gloss rather than to the text," and so to interpret "as to leave the words of the sacred lesson itself first and last in the reader's mind.” The task thus indicated is no easy one. In regard to many a passage where a note is indispensable the results of modern scholarship are either indecisive or are to be gathered only by laborious research; and, even when there is a well-ascertained agreement as to the matter, there still remains the great difficulty of putting it into a form which shall be at the same time both "condensed and popular." "The stringent necessity for condensation is apparent from the fact that the commentary and the Authorised Version occupy about equal portions of two crown octavo volumes. But the editors have managed to compress into so small a space a very large amount of wellselected matter. We have been struck with the excellence of some of the Introductions to the several books: they are brief, but full of instructive and interesting matter. The Commentary, as a whole, is not less marked by accuracy and sound learning than by judgment, candour, and piety. We highly com mend it to the large class of readers for whom it is designed.'
