The Weather. There is a little more moisture in the atmosphere than there was last month, but still the barometer keeps steady and moderately fine weather for the season may be looked for, As the month advances the temperature of the air will get lower, and rain or snow may be looked for, but as the temperature of the air is rather low for the season it is more likely to be snow than rain. Towards the end of the month the air again gets dryer, and a few healthy winter days will carry this month out, being much inclined to frost and sharp winter weather

ECLIPSES OF THE SUN, &c.

In the year 1852 there will be three Eclipses of the Sun, and three of the Moon.

The first is a total eclipse of the Moon on January 7th, and visible in these parts.

on January 21, but

The second is a partial Eclipse of the Sun, invisible in these parts, being visible at New Zealand and the South Pacific Ocean.

The third is a partial Eclipse of the Sun, on June 17th, 'but invisible in this part of the world, being only visible to the southern parts of South America, and in the Southern Ocean.

The fourth is a total Eclipse of the Moon on July 1st, but invisible in those parts, as the Moon will be below our horizon, at the time of the Eclipse.

The fifth is a total Eclipse of the Sun on December 10th, but only visible through the north of Asia and the North Pacific Ocean.

The sixth is a partial Eclipse of the Moon on December 26th, but invisible in this part of the world.

The beautiful planet Venus will be an evening star from January 6th to July 21st, and then a morning star to the end of the year.

The planet Jupiter will be a morning star from January 1st to June 6th, then an evening star until November 26th, and a morning star from November 26th, to the year's end.

Venus will be in an excellent situation for viewing with the telescope during the months of March, April, May, and June. She will be at her greatest distance from the Sun on May 12th, and at her greatest brilliancy on June 14th, when she will appear through the telescope as a beautiful crescent, and be quite capable of producing a shadow from objects.

Jupiter will be in the best situation for telescopic observations in the months of April, May, June, and July, when his four moons and belts may be seen on any clear night with a telescope magnifying from 60 to 100 times.

The planet Saturn will be best for viewing during the months of October, November, and December, when his ring may be seen on clear evenings with a telescope magnifying from 60 to 100 times, but to see well the divisions in his ring, and the whole of his eight moons, requires a very large and powerful telescope, with an aperture of from 15 to 20 inches, and of proportional length and power.

DR. HERSCHELL'S WEATHER TABLE, Improved and Illustrated by the Rev. Dr. Adam Clarke, the celebrated Wesleyan Preacher.

The Table and the accompanying remarks, are the result of many years' actual observation; the whole being constructed on a due consideration of the attraction of the Sun and Moon in their several positions respecting the Earth; and will by simple inspection, show the observer what kind of Weather will most probably follow the entrance of the Moon into any of her quarters, so that so near the truth as to be seldom or never found to fail.

1. The nearer the time of the Moon's Change, First Quarter, Full, and Last Quarter, is to MIDNIGHT, the fairer will the Weather be during the seven following days.

2. The space for this calculation occupies from ten at night till two next morning.

3. The nearer to MIDDAY, or NOON, these Phases of the Moon happen, the more foul or wet the weather may be expected during the seven following days.

4. The space for this calculation occupies from ten in the forenoon till two in the afternoon. These observations refer principally to Summer, though they affect Spring and Autumn nearly the same. 5. The Moon's Change, First Quarter, Full, and Last Quarter, happening during six of the afternoon hours, i.e. from four to ten, may be followed by fair weather; but this is mostly dependent on the WIND, as noted in the Table.

6. Though the Weather, from a variety of irregular canses, is more uncertain in the latter part of Autumn, the whole of Winter, and the beginning of Spring; yet in the main, the above observations will apply to those periods also.

A plain and easy Table, showing the Time of High Water.

[graphic]

That the Moon's age being observed in the first Column, you find the time of high water at all the places above-mentioned, in the respective Column of Numbers immediately below them. Thus, when the Moon is One, or Sixteen Days old, it is high water at Aberdeen, Chatham, Gravesend, &c. at 45 minutes past 1 o'clock. And so of the rest. The time is usually correct within half an hour.
