and write fifty.' Then said he to another; And how much owest thou ?' And he said; A hundred measures of wheat.' And he said unto him; 'Take thy bill, and write fourscore.' And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely; for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. And I say unto you; Make to yourselves friends of the mammon of unrighteousness; that, when ye fail, they may receive you into everlasting habitations. He that is faithful in that which is least, is faithful also in much; and he that is unjust in the least, is unjust also in much. If therefore ye have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches? and if ye have not been faithful in that which is another man's, who shall give you that which is your own? No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, aud despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon." And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things; and they derided him. And he said unto them; "Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts; for that which is highly esteemed among men, is abomination in the sight of God. The law and the prophets were until John; since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it. And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail." "There was a certain rich man, which was L.xvi. clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared 19-3 sumptuously every day. And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, and desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table; moreover, the dogs came and licked his sores. And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom. The rich man also died and was buried. And in hell he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. And he cried, and said; 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.' But Abraham said; 'Son, remember that thou in thy life-time receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that they which would pass from hence to you, cannot, neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence." Then he said; 'I pray thee, therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house; for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.' Abraham saith unto him; They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.' And he sad; 'Nay, father Abraham; but if one went unto thern. from the dead, they will repent.' And he said unto him; 'If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead." " J. xi. 1 -54. CHAPTER XVII. Resurrection of Lazarus-Healing of the Withered Hand-Discourses of Jesus occasioned by the hostility of the Pharisees, &c. Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying; "Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick." When Jesus heard that, he said; "This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby." Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. Then after that saith he to his disciples; "Let us go into Judea again." His disciples say unto him; "Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee, and goest thou thither again?" Jesus answered; "Are there not twelve hours in the day? if any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world; but if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him." These things said he and after that he saith unto them; "Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; but I go that I may awake him. out of sleep.." Then said his disciples; " Lord, if he sleep,. he shall do well." Howbeit Jesus spake of his death; but they thought that he had spoken of taking of rest in sleep. Then said Jesus unto them plainly; "Lazarus is dead; and I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless, let us go unto him." Then said Thomas, which is called Didymus, unto his fellow disciples; "Let us also go, that we may die with him." Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. Now Bethany was nigh unto Jerusalem, about fifteen furlongs off; and many of the Jews came to Martha and Mary, to comfort them concerning their brother. Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him; but Mary sat still in the house. Then said Martha unto Jesus; "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died; but I know that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee." Jesus saith unto her; "Thy brother shall rise again." Martha saith unto him; "I know that he shall rise again, in the resurrection at the last day." Jesus said unto her; "I am the resurrec tion, and the life; he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live; and whosoever liveth, and believeth in me, shall never die. Believest thou this?" She saith unto him; "Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world." And when she had so said, she went her way, and called Mary her sister secretly, saying; "The Master is come, and calleth for thee." As soon as she heard that, she arose quickly, and came unto him. (Now Jesus was not yet come into the town; but was in that place where Martha met him.) The Jews then which were with her in the house, and comforted her, when they saw Mary that she rose up hastily, and went out, followed her, saying; "She goeth unto the grave to weep there." Then when Mary was corne where Jesus was, and saw him, she fell down at his feet, saying unto him; "Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died." When Jesus therefore saw her weeping, and the Jews also weeping which came with her, he groaned in the spirit, and was troubled, and said; "Where have ye laid him ?" They say unto him; "Lord, come and see." |
