cause thou art an austere man; thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow.' And he saith unto him; Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant; thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow; wherefore then gavest not thou my money into the bank, that at my coming I might have required mine own with usury? And he said unto them that stood by; Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds. (And they said unto him; 'Lord, he hath ten pounds.') For I say unto you, that unto every one which hath, shall be given; and from him that hath not, even that he hath shall be taken away from him. But those mine enemies, which would not that I should reign over them, bring hither, and slay them before me.' "- And when he had thus spoken, he went before, ascending up to Jerusalem. Mk. x. And as he went out of Jericho with his 46-52 disciples, and a great number of people, blind Bartimeus, the son of Timeus, sat by the highway side begging. And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say; "Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me." And many charged him that he should hold his peace; but he cried the more a great deal; "Thou son of David, have mercy on me." And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called; and they call the blind man, saying unto him; "Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee." And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. And Jesus answered and said unto him; "What wilt thou that I should do unto thee?". The blind man said unto him; "Lord, that I might receive my sight." And Jesus said unto him; "Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole." And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. CHAPTER XXVI. 1 Jesus at Bethany - Supper at the house of Simon Mary anoints Jesus - Christ's public entry into Jerusalem - Miracles in the Temple. J. xi. And the Jews' passover was nigh at hand; 7. and many went out of the country up to Jerusalem before the passover, to purify themselves. Then sought they for Jesus, and spake among themselves, as they stood in the temple; "What think ye? that he will not come to the feast?" Now both the chief priests and the Pharisees had given a commandment, that if any man knew where he were, he should shew it, that they might take him. 1 Then Jesus, six days before the passover, J. xii. 6-9. J. xil. 9-11. came to Bethany, where Lazarus was which had been dead, whom he raised from the dead. There they made him a supper, in the house of Simon the Leper, and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair; and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him; "Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor?" This he said, not that he cared for the poor, but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. And Jesus said; "Let her alone; why trouble ye her? she hath wrought a good work on me. For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good; but me ye have not always. She hath done what she could; she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she hath done shall be spoken of, for a memorial of her." Much people of the Jews therefore knew that he was there; and they came, not for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see Lazarus also whom he had raised from the dead. But the chief priests consulted that they might put Lazarus also to death; because that by reason of him many of the Jews went away, and believed on Jesus. 1-9. And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, Mt.xxi and were come to Bethphage, unto the Mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them; "Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her; loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say aught unto you, ye shall say; The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them." All this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the the prophet, saying; "Tell ye the daughter of Zion; Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass." And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes; and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying; "Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest!" 39-41 And some of the Pharisees from among the I.. xix. multitude said unto him; "Master, rebuke thy disciples." And he answered and said unto them;“I tell you, that if these should hold their peace, the stones would immediately cry out." Matt. xxi. 10 11. Matt. xxi.14 -17. And when he was come near, he beheld the city, and wept over it, saying; "If thou hadst known, even thou, at least in this thy day, the things which belong unto thy peace! but now they are hid from thine eyes. For the days shall come upon thee, that thine enemies shall cast a trench about thee, and compass thee round, and keep thee in on every side; and shall lay thee even with the ground, and thy children within thee; and they shall not leave in thee one stone upon another; because thou knewest not the time of thy visitation." And when he was come into Jerusalem, all the city was moved, saying; "Who is this?" And the multitude said; "This is Jesus the prophet, of Nazareth of Galilee." And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying; "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were sore displeased, and unto him; "Hearest thou what these say?" And Jesus saith unto them; "Yea; have ye never read; 'Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise?' " And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany, and he lodged there. |
