A

Sermon

PREACHED AT ST. CHAD'S CHURCH, SHREWSBURY,

ON

SUNDAY EVENING, DEC. 12, 1841,

BEING THE

FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT,

CHIEFLY ON THE DOCTRINE OF

Baptismal Regeneration.

Having been requested to publish this Sermon I was willing to accede to the request, as it may form an appropriate companion to the one lately printed on the Lord's Supper. It is earnestly hoped that the various authorities here cited may suffice to shew that the two great doctrines herein set forth are not “new opinions,” but are the doctrines alike of Scripture, of Catholic Antiquity, and of the Anglican Church whereof we are

members.

*** It may be objected to the following discourses that it is unseemly in one who can allege neither age nor experience in his behalf to deliver, and much more to publish, Sermons involving positive statements on topics which are in these days made the subject of much, and I may add, oftentimes unhallowed controversy. To this I must be allowed to reply that no one could be more alive to anything savouring of prematureness or immodesty than myself, but that the statements therein set forth were made by me not controversially, or as the offspring of my private judgment, but merely delivered in my office as the doctrines of that Church whereof I am ordained a Minister, and to whose decisions I am bound to submit. If I have now published in this form what I wrote simply for the ordinary requirements of the pulpit, it is because my statements have been misrepresented in private and violently assailed in public : because I felt it my duty to shew for the satisfaction of those who look for instruction at my hands, that what I thus delivered was not my unauthorized opinion,
