And in the day-time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out, and abode in the mount that is called the mount of Olives. And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple, for to hear him.

120. The transactions on the fourth day of the week in which Jesus was crucified.

Time.

AND it came to pass, Place. A. D. 33. when Jesus had finished all Bethany. Two days before the these sayings, he said unto his disci4th Passo- ples, "Ye know that after two days yer. "is the feast of the passover, and the "Son of man is betrayed to be crucified."

Then assembled together the chief Priests and the Scribes, and the elders of the people, unto the palace of the High Priest, who was called Caiaphas, and consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. But they said, Not on the feast-day, lest there be an uproar among the people.

Now when Jesus was in Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper; there they made him a supper; and Martha served; but Lazarus was one of them that sat at the table with him. Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. But when his disciples saw it they had indignation, Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. Then said Jesus, "Let her "alone: against the day of my burying hath "she kept this: for the poor always ye have "with you; but me ye have not always. "She hath done what she could: she is come "aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. Verily I say unto you, Wheresoever this gospel shall be preached throughout the

My burial is near at hand, and this good work is conveniently done against that occasion, when it was customary to use costly spices and perfumes.

"whole world, this also that she hath done "shall be spoken of for a memorial of her."

Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve. And he went his way, and communed with the chief Priests and Captains, how he might betray him unto them. And he said unto them, What will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenanted with him for thirty pieces of silver. And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude."

121. Jesus prepares to keep the Passover.

Time.

Now the first day of the Place. A. D. 33. feast of unleavened bread, Bethany. Day before when the passover must be killed, the fourth the disciples came to Jesus, saying

unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare for thee to eat the passover? And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. And "wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the good man of the house, The Master saith,

a The Passover was one of the most solemn and sacred feasts of the Jews. It was so called in memory of the deliverance of the Jews from Egyptian bondage, at which time the destroying angel, when he put to death the first born of the Egyptians, passed over the houses of the Israelites, which were all marked with the blood of the lamb that had been killed and eaten the evening before in every Hebrew house, and was therefore called the Paschal Lamb.

"Where is the guest-chamber, where I shall "eat the passover with my disciples? And "he will shew you a large upper room fur"nished and prepared: there make ready "for us."

And his disciples went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

122. Jesus sits down with the twelve. There is an ambitious contention among the twelve.

Now when the even was Place. Time. Jerusalem. A. D. 33. come Jesus sat down with Fourth the twelve. And when he knew that Passover. his hour was come that he should depart out of this world unto the Father, having loved his own which were in the world, he loved them unto the end." And he said unto "With desire I have desired to eat them, "this passover with you before I suffer: for "I say unto you, I will not any more eat "thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom " of God."
