Passions, like elements, tho' born to fight, TH'Eternal Art, educing good from ill,
Yet inix'd and soften'd in his work unite : Grafts on this Passiou dur best principle:
These 'tis enough to semper and enploy; "l'is thus the Mercury of Man is fix'd,
But what composes Man, can Man destroy ? Strong grows the Virtue with his naiure mix'd ;
Suffice that Reason kerp to Nature's road, The dross cements what else were too refin'd,
Subject, compound them, follow tret and God. And in one int'rest body acts with mind.
Love, Hope, and Joy, fairPleasure's smiling train; As fruits, ungrateful to the planter's care,
Hate, Fear, and Grief, the family of Pain : On savage stocks inserted learn to bear;
These mix'd with art,and to due bounds confin'd, The surest Virtues thus from Passions shooting
Make and maintain the balance of the mind; Wild Nature's vigor working at the root.
The lights and shades, whose well-accorded strife What crops of wit and honesty appear
Gives all the strength and color of our life. From spleen, from obstinacy, hate, or fear!

Pleasures are crer in our hands and eyes ; See anger, zeal and fortitude supply :
And, when in act they cease, in prospect rise : Ev'n av'rice, prudence, sloth, philosophy;
Present to grasp, and future still to find, Lust, thro' some certain strainers weli refind,
The whole employ of body and of mind. Is gentle love, and charms all womankind;
All spread their charnis, but charm not ali alike; Envy, to which th' ignoble mind 's a slave,
On diff'rent senses diff'rent objects strike : Is einulation in the learn'd or brave ;
Hence diff'rent Passionis more or less inflame, Nor Virt:re, male or temale, can we name,
As strong or weak the organs of the frame; But what will grow on Pride, or grow onShame.
And hence onte master Passion in the breast, Thus Nature gives us (let it check out pride)

As man, perhaps, the moment of his breath, Reason the bias turns to good from ill,
Receives the lurkin' principle of death;, And Neru reigns a Titus if he will.

Reason itself but gives it edge and pow'r; Fools ! who from hence into the notion fall,
As heaven's blest beam turns vinegar more sour. That Vice or Virtue there is none at all.

We, wretched subjects tho' 10 lawful way, If white and black blend, softon, and unite
In this weak queen, some fav'rite still obey : A thousand ways, is there no black or white ?
Ah! if she lend not arms as well as rules, Ask your own heart, and nothing is so plain;

A sharp accuser, but a helpless friend ! As, to be hated, needs but to be seen;

Thine the full harvest of the golden year?

ARGUMENT.

While Man exclaims, See all things for my use! God, in the nature of each being, founds
See man for mine !' replies a pamper'd goose: Its proper bliss, and sets its proper bounds :
And just as short of reason he must fall, But as he fram'd the Whole, the Whole to bless,
Who thinks all made for one, not one for all. On mutual Wants built mutual Happiness;

Grant that the po-x'rful still the weak control, So, from the first, eternal order ran,
Be Man the Wit and Tyrant of the whole : And creature link'd to creature, man to man.
Nature that Tyrant checks; he only knows, Whate'er of life all quick'ning æther keeps,
And helps another creature's wants and wues. Or breathes thro'air, or shoots beneath the deeps,
Say will the falcon, stooping from above, Or pours profuse on earth, one nature feeds
Smit with her varying plumage, spare the dove! The vital Haine, and swells the genial seeds.
Admires the jay the insecis gilded wings? Not man alone, but all that roain the woud,
Or hears the hawk when Philomela sings ? Or wing the sky, or roll along the food,
Man cares for all : to birds he gives his woods, Fach loves itself, but not itself alone ;
To beasts his pastures, and to fish his floods, Each sex desires alike, till two are one.
For some his int’rest prompts him to provide, Nor ends the pleasure with the fierce embrace;
For more his pleasure, yet for more his pride : They love theinselves, a third time, in their race,
All feed on one vain Patron, and enjoy Thus beast and bird their common charge attend,
Th' extensive blessing of his luxury.

The mothers nurse it, and the sires defend. That very life his learned hunger craves, The young dismiss’d to wander earth or air, He saves from famine, froin the savage saves ; There stops the Instinct, and there ends the care; Nay, feasts the animal he dooms his fcast, The link dissolves, each seeks a fresh embrace ; And till he ends the being, makes it blest; Another love succeeds another race. Which sees no more the stroke, or feels the pain, A longer care Mau's helpless kind demands ; Than favor'd Man by touch ethereal.slain. That longer care contracts more lasting bands : The creature had biš feast of life before; Reflection, Reason, still the ties improve, Thou too must perish wheụ thy feast is o'er! At once extend the int'rest and the love: To each unthinking being, Heaven a friend, With choice we fix, with sympathy we burn; Gives not the useless knowledge of its end ! Each Virtue in each Passion takes its turn; To Man imparts it; but with such a view And still new needs, new helps, new habits rise, As, while he dreads it, makes him hope it too: That graft benevolence on charities. The hour conceald, and so remote the fear, Still as one brood, and as another rose, Death still draws nearer, never seeming near. These nat'ral love maintain, habitual those : Great standing miracle ! that Heaven assign'd The last scarce ripen’d into perfect Man, lis only thinking thing this turn of mind. Saw helpless him from whom their life began:

Whether with Reason or with Instinct blest, Mem'ry and forecast just returns engage; Know, all enjoy that pow'r which suits them That pointed back to youth, this on to age : To bliss alıke by that direction tend, (best; While pleasure, gratitude, and hope combin'd, And find the means proportion'd to their end. Still spread the int'rest, and preserv'd the kind. Say, where ful Instinct

' is th' unerring guide, Nor think, in Nature's state they blindly trod; What Pope or Council can they need beside ? The State of Nalure was the reign of God: Reason, however able, cool at best,

Sure by quick Nature happiness to gain, In the same temple, the resounding wood, Which heavier Reason labors at in vain. All vocal beings hymn'd their equal God: This too serves always, Reason never long; The shrine with gore unstain'd, with gold un'One must go right, ilic other may go wrong,

drest; See ihen the acting and comparing pow'rs Unbrib’d, unbloody, stood the blanieless priest: One in their nature, which are two in ours; Heaven's attribute was Universal Care; And Reason raise o'er Instinct as you can, And Man's prerogative to rule, but spare. In this 'tis God directs, in that 'tis Man. Ah! how unlike the man of times to coine !

Who taught the nations of the field and wood Of half that live the butcher and the tomb; To shun their poison, and to choose their food? Who, foe to Nature, bears the gen'ral groan, Prescient, the tides or tempests to withstand, Murders their species, and betrays his own. Build on the wave, or arch beneath the sand? But just disease to luxury succeeds, Who made the spider parallels design, And ev'ry death its own avenger breeds ; Sure as De Moivre, without rule or line? The fury passions from that blood began, Who bid the stork, Columbus like, explore And turn'd on Man a fiercer savage, Man. Ilcar'ns, not his own, and worlds unknown Sce him from Nature rising slow to Art! before?

Their law his eye, their oracle his tongue. Self-love forsook the path it first pursued,
He from the wand'ring furrow callid the food, And found the private in the public good.
Taught to command the sire, control the food, 'Twas then the studious beadorgen'rous mind,
Draw forth the monsters of th' abyss profound, Follower of God, or friend of human kind,
Or fetch th' aënal eagle to the ground. Poet or Patriot, rose but 10 restore
Till drooping, sick’ning, dying they began, The faith and moral Nature gave before;
Whom they tercr'd as God, to mourn as Man: Resum'd her antient light, not kindled new;
Then, looking up, from sire to sire, explor'd If not God's image, yet his shadow drew ;

Man, like his Maker, saw that all was right; Such is the world's great harmony, ihat-springs
To Virtue in the Paths of Pleasure trod, From Order, Union, full Consent of things :
And own'd a Father when he own'd a God. Where small and great, where weak arid migbty
Love all the faith and all th' allegiance then:

made For Nature knew no right divine in.Men, To serve, not suffer : strengthen, not invade ;

More pow'rful each as needful to the rest, That something still which prompts the eternal And, in proportion as it blesses, blest :

In Faith and Hope the world will disagree, Twin'd with the wreathsParnassian laurels yield, But all Mankind's concern is Charity: Or reap'd in iron harvests to the field ?
